Beas Kund Trek — 3 Days to the River Source

Alpine lake trek from Solang Valley to Beas Kund at 3,700 metres, following the Beas River to its headwaters

The Beas Kund trek follows the Beas River from its valley floor to its source in a small alpine lake ringed by glacial streams and high grasslands. The three-day route departs Solang Valley at 2,560 metres, climbs through pine forest to the Dhundi campsite on the river's bank, then makes a demanding day-long ascent to Beas Kund itself. At the lake, multiple streams converge — some fed by nearby glaciers, others originating from the lake basin itself — creating the river's birth point. The return follows the same trail downhill to the valley. The trek takes place over three days, with the second day constituting the majority of elevation gain and duration.

Best time to go: 1st June to 15th Oct Every Saturday

Highlights

  • Climb from Solang Valley through pine forest to Dhundi campsite at 3,150 metres, crossing streams along a narrowing trail
  • Ascend to Beas Kund alpine lake at 3,700 metres — the source of the Beas River, surrounded by glacial tributaries and high grasslands
  • Observe the transition from tree line to open grassland, with views of fir and spruce forests giving way to alpine meadows
  • Locate the origin point where multiple glacier-fed streams and the lake itself feed into the main river channel
  • Trek downhill from Dhundi to return to Solang Valley, retracing the ascent route with gentler gradients on the final day

Day by day

1Solang Valley to Dhundi — Pine Forest AscentSolang Valley · Dhundi · pine forest · stream · Beas River
Trekkers arrive at Solang Valley (2,560 metres) and begin the first day's hike toward Dhundi. The trail narrows as it moves away from the valley floor, entering pine forest on a clearly marked path. After a short distance, the route crosses a stream — the first of several water features along the ascent. The trail continues through forest alongside the Beas River, gaining elevation gradually over roughly 8 kilometres. Dhundi emerges as a small settlement on the river's bank at 3,150 metres, positioned at the tree line. The campsite sits here for the night, allowing trekkers to acclimatize and rest after the 4- to 5-hour ascent.
2Dhundi to Beas Kund — Ascent to the Alpine LakeDhundi to Beas Kund · Beas Kund · Beas Kund to Dhundi
This is the trek's longest and most demanding day. The route climbs steeply from Dhundi toward the alpine zone, covering approximately 12 kilometres round-trip and requiring 8 to 9 hours. Within a short distance of the starting point, the landscape opens — scattered boulders create natural viewpoints where fir and spruce trees dominate the lower slopes. As elevation increases, the forest transitions visibly; the tree line becomes distinct, and grassland takes over. After several hours of ascent, the character of the terrain shifts to exposed alpine meadow with patches of purple wildflowers on the grassy slopes. Beas Kund itself sits at approximately 3,700 metres — a compact alpine lake with bright blue water. The source of the Beas River is manifest here: multiple small streams converge from the surrounding terrain, some originating from nearby glaciers, others rising from the lake basin itself. The streams that feed the main river channel are clearly visible from the lake shore. Time at the lake allows for photography, rest, and observation of the water source. The return descent to Dhundi retraces the same route and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, ending at the campsite for overnight rest.
3Dhundi to Solang Valley — Descent and ReturnDhundi · Solang Valley · pine forest
The final day involves a downhill trek of approximately 8 kilometres back to Solang Valley, typically completed in 3 to 4 hours. The route descends through the same terrain traversed on day one — pine forest giving way to the wider valley floor. The descent gradient is gentler than the ascent, allowing for a more measured pace and opportunity for photography along the route. Trekkers arrive at Solang Valley in the afternoon, completing the three-day circuit.
