Beijing in a Day: Forbidden City, Hutongs & Temple of Heaven

Tiananmen Square to Temple of Heaven via metro and hutong alley — 1 day with dumpling cooking lunch

A single-day circuit through Beijing's three major historical sites, moving between them by subway as residents do. You'll walk through the Forbidden City's 500-year span of imperial government, navigate the alleyways of a traditional hutong neighborhood, and visit the Temple of Heaven before returning to your hotel. A local family hosts a dumpling cooking session during lunch, and a rickshaw ride through the hutong completes the day's immersion in old Beijing's everyday rhythms.

Day by day

1Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City & Hutongs by MetroTiananmen Square · Forbidden City · hutong · Temple of Heaven
The day moves through central Beijing via subway, beginning at Tiananmen Square—one of the world's largest public plazas, home to the Monument of the People's Heroes and the Great Hall of the People. From there you enter the Forbidden City, built between 1406 and 1420 as the ceremonial and political seat of imperial government for over 500 years. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, it holds the world's most extensive collection of preserved ancient wooden structures. After the Forbidden City, the route shifts to hutong—traditional alleyway neighborhoods formed by lines of courtyard dwellings. Here you'll walk through Old Beijing's vernacular streetscape, then transfer by metro to the Temple of Heaven before a final metro ride returns you to your hotel. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. A local family hosts a dumpling cooking experience during lunch, and a rickshaw ride through the hutong provides a slower-paced way to move through the alleyways.
