Beijing's Imperial Core: Tiananmen to Hutong — 1 Day
A full-day walking route through Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the hutong lanes of old Beijing
This walking tour traces the geographic and historical heart of Beijing in a single day, moving from Tiananmen Square through the Forbidden City—home to 24 emperors across five centuries—and into the imperial gardens and residential neighborhoods that surround the center. The route connects three distinct spatial layers: the grand ceremonial plazas, the walled palace complex, and the narrow hutong alleyways that predate modern Beijing. An English-speaking guide leads the full day, with lunch at a local restaurant included.

Your guide meets you at your hotel in the morning to begin a walking route through central Beijing. The first destination is Tiananmen Square, the ceremonial plaza that marks the southern entry to the imperial city. From there, the route proceeds northward through symbolic avenues toward the Forbidden City, the walled palace that served as home to 24 emperors between 1368 and 1911. After moving through the palace complex, you continue to Jingshan Park, a former imperial garden positioned north of the Forbidden City, offering a vantage point over the palace rooftops and surrounding districts. The route then leads westward to Beihai Park, one of China's most extensively preserved imperial gardens, where you visit the Jade Island and the Nine Dragon Screen. The day concludes in the hutong neighborhoods near Houhai Lake—the old residential quarters of Beijing, where narrow alleyways and traditional courtyard homes represent centuries of urban life predating the modern city. Lunch at a local restaurant is included.
