Bijli Mahadev Trek — 2 Days

Kullu Valley trek to a lightning-struck temple at 8,000 feet, starting from Jana village

Bijli Mahadev Temple stands at 8,000 feet on Mathan Hills in Kullu Valley, Himachal Pradesh, a two-day trek from the town of Manali. The temple, constructed in stone and wood with a sloping wooden-plank roof typical of hill architecture, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and carries a distinctive history: the statue inside is said to be struck by lightning at intervals, shattering into pieces, which the temple priest then reassembles using butter as adhesive. The trek begins in Jana village, an ancient settlement once capital of the Kullu Kingdom, and ascends through pine and deodar forests, terraced orchards of apples and pears, and Himalayan villages before reaching the ridge at Matikochar in the Kais Wildlife Sanctuary. From the temple summit, views extend across the Kullu and Parvati valleys and the confluence of the Parvati and Beas rivers. The descent follows grassland and woodland back to Chansari Village, from where transport returns to Manali.
