Central Japan Walking Loop: Gorges, Museums & Mining Heritage — Day Trip

Walking route through Takatsudokyo Gorge, historic mining sites, and art museums near Nikko City

This single-day walking itinerary connects seven distinct sites across central Japan's Tochigi Prefecture, moving between the Iwajuku Museum, the narrow Takatsudokyo Gorge, an active soy sauce brewery, and the Ashio Copper Mine—one of Japan's most historically significant mining operations. The route is designed around short walking segments and road transfers between destinations. Most attractions operate year-round; the Sayado-Ohata Peach Blossom Road is accessible only in early to mid-April when trees are in bloom.

Highlights

  • Walking through Takatsudokyo Gorge, a narrow valley corridor carved by the Akatsuka River
  • Brewery tour at Oka Naosaburo Shoten, an operational soy sauce producer showcasing traditional fermentation methods
  • Iwajuku Museum, displaying archaeological findings from the Paleolithic period and the nearby Iwajuku dig site
  • Tomihiro Art Museum in Nikko City, housing contemporary and classical Japanese art
  • Ashio Copper Mine, a preserved historical mining complex
  • Sayado-Ohata Peach Blossom Road, a seasonal route lined with flowering trees (early to mid-April)
