Central & Northern Thailand: Death Railway, Night Train & Karen Hills — 10 Days

From Bangkok's old town through Kanchanaburi's World War II sites to a Karen hilltribe trek and bamboo raft descent in the northern hills.

This 10-day journey moves through Thailand's central and northern regions with deliberate pacing, mixing urban exploration with off-road trekking. You'll spend two days embedded in a Karen village without electricity or running water, sleeping in bamboo huts and traveling out by bamboo raft through rapids. The itinerary begins in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district, moves to Kanchanaburi to trace the Thailand-Burma Railway's history—walking the Bridge over the River Kwai and Hellfire Pass—then travels by overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai. From there, a 3.5-hour trek leads into the hills to Bann Pa Kao Lam, a Karen settlement where you'll hear village stories around a campfire. The return journey follows the Tang River by bamboo raft, with a stop at a Lahu village en route. The trip assumes comfort matters, but also that stepping into unfamiliar conditions—the bamboo huts, the river crossing, the truck ride to trailhead—is part of the value.
