Chengdu: Giant Panda Base & Dujiangyan Irrigation System — 1 Day
A full day from Chengdu visiting China's panda conservation efforts and a hydraulic engineering site near Dujiangyan.
This one-day itinerary pairs two significant sites within driving distance of Chengdu: the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, where conservation efforts are being made to save this endangered species, and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a project older than the Great Wall. The morning focuses on observing pandas during their active hours—eating, playing, and resting—while the afternoon visits the system's temples, stone bridges, and surrounding parkland overlooking the Min River valley.
Highlights
- Giant Panda Breeding Research Base: observe pandas feeding, playing, and napping in a working research facility
- Dujiangyan Irrigation System: walk among stone infrastructure, temples, and bridges in a beautiful park.
- Min River valley views: clear-day sightlines to surrounding mountains and snow peaks from the Dujiangyan site
- Private air-conditioned transfer from Chengdu (approximately 1.5 hours each way)
- English-speaking guide throughout the full day

Your guide meets you at your hotel in Chengdu at 09:00 AM. The drive to Dujiangyan takes approximately 1.5 hours in a private, air-conditioned vehicle. Upon arrival, you begin at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, where conservation staff maintain a population of captive pandas alongside ongoing breeding and research programs. The base prioritizes observation during the pandas' most active periods—typically morning and late afternoon—when they feed on bamboo, move between enclosures, and interact with one another. You can move relatively close to the animals and photograph their behavior throughout the morning.
After midday, you transfer to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a UNESCO World Heritage site located nearby. The site consists of stone weirs, sluice gates, and intake channels integrated into a landscaped park. You can walk among the original stonework, visit Erwang Temple and other structures from various dynasties, and cross bridges spanning the river channels. On clear days, snow-covered peaks are visible in the distance. After thorough exploration, you return to your vehicle for the drive back to Chengdu, arriving by evening.
