Chiangdao Highlands: Two-Day Trek & Valley Homestay

A 2-day trek from Chiang Mai through plantations and ridgelines to a valley homestay, with flexible descent options

This two-day trek departs Chiang Mai for the Chiangdao Highlands, where a full day's ascent through shifting vegetation and cultivated slopes leads to a homestay positioned above a working valley. The route gains meaningful altitude—flora and air temperature both change visibly as you climb—passing through a hilltribe village before reaching your overnight base. Day two offers two descent options: a shorter ridge walk holding altitude for roughly three and a half hours, or a longer five-hour route returning through different terrain. Throughout, you stay in simple rooms with valley views, eat home-cooked Thai food, and drink highland-grown coffee brewed the morning of departure.

Highlights

  • Five-hour mountain ascent through plantations and visible flora transitions, with a hilltribe village rest stop
  • Valley homestay with panoramic views from basic but clean rooms and home-cooked Thai dinner
  • Sunrise coffee ritual using freshly brewed highland plantation beans
  • Choice of two day-two routes: 3.5-hour ridge walk at altitude or 5-hour scenic descent through countryside
  • Final stop at a mountain coffee shop before transfer back to Chiang Mai

Day by day

1Ascent Through Plantations to the Valley Homestayplantations · homestay · Chiang Mai · small hilltribe village
Hotel pickup in Chiang Mai leads to a ninety-minute drive toward the trekking area. The ascent begins immediately—a sustained three- to four-hour climb through noticeably changing vegetation. As altitude increases, the landscape shifts from lower forest through working plantations. A small hilltribe village marks a natural rest point, where you'll eat a packed lunch and regroup. The final push continues through planted slopes to the homestay, which sits in a valley with views across cultivated land and distant ridges. Your room is basic but clean, with a window toward the valley below. Late afternoon means settling in and taking tea as the light changes across the slopes. Thai dinner is served at the homestay—straightforward, home-cooked food after a full day of climbing. Total walking time for day one is approximately five hours, with participants carrying their own packs, packed lunch, and water bottles throughout.
2Ridge Walk or Scenic Descent to Mountain Coffee Shopridge trail · countryside · small mountain coffee shop · Chiang Mai city
Morning begins with freshly brewed highland coffee or tea. Today's hiking is gentler overall, moving downhill on a different route than the ascent. Your guide offers two options based on conditions and preference. The shorter route climbs briefly, then follows a ridge trail at relatively constant altitude for around three hours—a walk with sweeping countryside views before descending to a small mountain coffee shop. The longer option covers the same initial terrain but extends the descent over five hours through more varied countryside before arriving at the same coffee shop. Both paths end at a small café where you'll rest, meet your vehicle, and begin the ninety-minute drive back to Chiang Mai city. Hotel, airport, or train station drop-off concludes the trek.
