Delhi by Bicycle: Old City Gates, Government Center & Street Markets — 3 Hours

A morning cycle ride through Delhi's historic monuments, colonial architecture, and street markets from Turkman Gate to India Gate.

Delhi has served as India's capital since 1931, built on a design by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The city layers British colonial administrative centers—Parliament House, the Presidential Palace, India Gate—over medieval Old Delhi, where five of the original 14 walled-city gates still stand. A three-hour morning bicycle tour covers this layered geography, moving from Turkman Gate (built 1658, named after the saint Hazrat Shah Turkman) through the dense market district of Pahar Ganj, past Connaught Place shopping center, and into the broad ceremonial avenues of central New Delhi. The route ends at India Gate, a war memorial built to honor 90,000 Indian soldiers from World War I, with a breakfast stop at Bengali Sweet House. The tour operates with two guides and includes bicycles, chai, water, and helmets on request.

The tour departs early morning from Delite Cinema. The first stop is Turkman Gate, one of five surviving gates from Old Delhi's original walled perimeter. Built in 1658, the gate was named after the saint Hazrat Shah Turkman, whose tomb stands nearby in the dense, congested lanes of Old Delhi. From there, the route passes through New Delhi Station before reaching Pahar Ganj, a one-kilometer market district lined with shops selling books, music, jewelry, textiles, wooden statues, and handicrafts. The route continues to Connaught Place, a major shopping and dining center, then to Parliament House, an administrative complex designed by Lutyens and Baker. The Presidential Palace follows—a 320-acre estate that once served as the British Viceroy's residence and now houses the Indian President. The grounds include Mughal Gardens, open to the public only on selected days. From there, cyclists travel along Rajpath to India Gate, a war memorial dedicated to 90,000 Indian soldiers who died in World War I.
