Goecha La Trek, Sikkim — 10 Days

High-altitude Himalayan trek from Yuksom to Goecha La pass (16,000 feet), with camp nights on alpine meadows and views of Kanchenjunga

The Goecha La trek in Sikkim ascends from the valley town of Yuksom to a high-altitude mountain pass at 16,000 feet in the eastern Himalayas. The route crosses nine days of trekking terrain, moving through coniferous forest, rhododendron groves, and open alpine meadows. Key way-stations include Sachen, Tshoka, Dzongri, and the high camp at Lamuney, where trekkers walk above the cloud layer. The trek culminates at Goecha La pass, which serves as base camp for expeditions on Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak on Earth. The ascent to Goecha La begins before dawn on day seven, via Samiti Lake and the Zemathang glacier plateau, and the return to lower elevation follows the same route in reverse. All nights are spent in tented camps or forest rest houses except the first and final nights in Yuksom town.

Best time to go: April - May, October, November

Day by day

1New Jalpaiguri to YuksomYuksom · New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP)
Travel from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) by vehicle to Yuksom, a six-hour drive covering lowland terrain before ascending to the small town set at 5,670 feet in the West District of Sikkim. Yuksom sits in a mountain valley and serves as the official starting point for the trek. The valley offers views of surrounding peaks, often obscured by cloud cover, with occasional glimpses of distant snow-covered summits on clear mornings. Check into guest house accommodation and rest overnight.
2Yuksom to Sachen via River Rathong and Three Stream CrossingsYuksom · Sachen · Pha Khola stream · Mentongang River
The first day of trekking begins in the valley and traverses expansive green fields toward the Rathong River. The trail enters coniferous forest and within 30 minutes passes through small settlements. The first suspension bridge spans Pha Khola stream; pausing to look down reveals the river flowing below through forest canopy. The path continues through woodland where a waterfall appears after another 50 meters, followed by an iron bridge crossing another stream. After roughly an hour more, a third bridge spans Mentongang River. From this point, the ascent steepens noticeably as the trail climbs toward Sachen, a small clearing in dense forest at 7,200 feet, reached after approximately 30 more minutes. Overnight camp at Sachen.
3Sachen to Tshoka via Bakhim and a Swaying Wooden BridgeTshoka · Bakhim · Perk Chu stream
From Sachen, the trail maintains relatively gentle altitude gain through flat terrain before climbing more steeply. A wooden suspension bridge crosses Perk Chu stream, decorated with Buddhist prayer flags; as trekkers walk across, the bridge sways and shifts underfoot, creating a vivid physical sensation. Beyond the bridge, the path climbs through rhododendron and fern forest as elevation steadily increases. At Bakhim (8,600 feet), the forest opens enough to reveal clear views of the Kanchenjunga Range with Mount Padim visible in the distance. The terrain here is particularly suitable for photography. From Bakhim, the trail descends slightly to Tshoka at 9,650 feet, a small village with nearby accommodation options including large forest huts and a forest rest house. The day covers approximately four hours of trekking. Overnight camp at Tshoka.
4Tshoka to Dzongri via Phedang — Major Elevation GainPhedang meadow · Dzongri base camp · high-altitude pond with Buddhist monastery
This section represents a significant climbing day. The path ascends steeply to a high-altitude pond where a Buddhist monastery stands, then continues through increasingly demanding terrain. Caution is required on steep sections. The trail eventually becomes less punishing, passing over paved sections that deteriorate into rough, rocky ground. Phedang meadow (12,050 feet) appears surrounded by rhododendron forest with fir and spruce trees creating a dense green backdrop. Lunch is typically taken here while the landscape can be observed from the open meadow. After resuming, the trail becomes steep again toward Dzongri base camp at 12,980 feet. At this elevation, tall trees disappear and the landscape shifts to montane grassland with low shrubs and grass. Overnight camp at Dzongri.
5Dzongri Peak and Descent to ThansingDzongri Top · Dzongri base camp · Kokchurang · Thansing meadow
An early ascent leads to Dzongri Top at 13,675 feet in approximately one hour, after which the trek retraces to Dzongri base camp. From there, the descent to Thansing presents a comparatively easier phase of the trek involving roughly equal ascent and descent of 1,000 feet. The five-to-six-hour downhill section passes through Kokchurang, a rough area where evergreen coniferous forest covers the slopes and a river flows adjacent to the trail. Thansing meadow (12,930 feet) spreads wide and flat, covered with lush grass and serving as the overnight stop. Overnight camp at Thansing.
6Thansing to Lamuney — High Alpine MeadowThansing to Lamuney · Lamuney
This is among the easier trekking days, requiring approximately two hours to traverse the 4.2-kilometer distance. The trail passes through nearly flat meadow terrain. As elevation increases beyond Thansing, vegetation thins dramatically; by Lamuney (13,963 feet), grass has largely disappeared due to altitude and exposure. At this height, clouds frequently settle directly on the meadow at ground level, creating a singular experience of walking through cloud cover with high peaks rising on both sides. The treeless, open landscape combined with the cloud immersion creates an otherworldly environment. Overnight camp at Lamuney.
7Lamuney to Goecha La Pass and Return to KokchurangGoecha La pass · Kokchurang · Samiti Lake · Zemathang glacier plateau · Lamuney to Samiti Lake · Goecha La pass to Kokchurang
This is the longest and most demanding day of the trek. The start time is 3 a.m., the earliest departure of the journey. The first 45 minutes ascend through mountainous terrain to Samiti Lake, a high-altitude alpine pond set in nearly vegetation-free landscape. The approach includes rocky sections and flat areas punctuated by abrupt steeper climbs. Continuing from Samiti Lake, the trail reaches the Zemathang glacier plateau, typically snow-covered year-round, offering another opportunity to witness sunrise over the Kanchenjunga Range. Approximately two hours beyond the glacier lies Goecha La pass at 16,000 feet, the highest point of the trek and the established base camp for mountaineering expeditions on Mount Kanchenjunga. The descent begins immediately after reaching the pass, retracing steps downward toward Kokchurang. Huts exist at Kokchurang for overnight shelter, or tents may be erected by the river. Overnight camp at Kokchurang.
8Kokchurang Descent to Tshoka via PhedangTshoka · Phedang · Kokchurang to Phedang · Phedang to Tshoka
You've reached the final stretch of the Goecha La expedition. Today is a descent through the mountains, beginning with the relatively straightforward walk to Phedang. This section covers around 10 kilometers over approximately 4 hours with no elevation gain to contend with. On arrival at Phedang, take time to rest before continuing the trek. The final leg descends toward Tshoka over roughly 3 hours of hiking. The camp for the night is at Tshoka.
9Tshoka to Yuksom — Final Trek DayTshoka to Yuksom · Yuksom
The last trekking day follows the ascent route in reverse, retracing through Bakhim and Sachen over six to seven hours to return to Yuksom at lower elevation. Overnight stay in Yuksom guest house.
10Yuksom to New JalpaiguriYuksom to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP)
