Gokyo Valley Trek: High-Altitude Lakes & Everest Region Views — 13 Days

Lukla to Gokyo Lakes (4,750m) via Namche Bazaar, Ngozumpa Glacier, and Gokyo Ri (5,357m) — a quieter Khumbu route over 13 days

The Gokyo Valley Trek follows the Dudh Koshi River north from Lukla into one of the Khumbu's least-trafficked high corridors, reaching the sacred Gokyo Lakes at 4,750 meters before ascending Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for a 360-degree view that takes in Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu simultaneously. Because this route diverges from the Everest Base Camp trail and heads into the Gokyo Valley, it sees fewer trekkers than the main route — a meaningful difference in atmosphere along the high valley trails. The 13-day itinerary opens with a 35-minute mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,610m), then progresses through Phakding, Namche Bazaar (3,440m), and the Sagarmatha National Park boundary before climbing steadily through rhododendron and birch forest to Dole (4,084m) and Machhermo (4,410m). The final approach to Gokyo runs alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's longest glacier — passing three progressively higher lakes before reaching the main settlement on the eastern shore of Dudh Pokhari, the third lake. The pre-dawn ascent of Gokyo Ri on Day 8 is the trek's focal point: a rocky climb rewarded by an unobstructed panorama across Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, as well as the Ngozumpa Glacier below. Acclimatization is built into the schedule with a full rest day in Namche Bazaar, and a contingency day in Kathmandu at the end of the itinerary provides a buffer against weather-dependent flight delays on the Lukla sector. All trekking days include full-board lodge accommodation. The physical grade is moderate to challenging, with the highest point reached being Gokyo Ri at 5,357 meters. No technical climbing is required, but altitude awareness and a reasonable base level of fitness are practical prerequisites.

Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport, trekkers are met and transferred to their hotel in Kathmandu for check-in and an overnight stay.
2Kathmandu to Lukla by Air, then Trek to Phakding (2,610m–2,610m descent to valley)Kathmandu · Lukla · Phakding · Lukla to Phakding
An early departure from Kathmandu connects to a 35-minute mountain flight into Lukla (2,610m), a small airstrip set above the Dudh Koshi valley. After meeting the trekking crew and organizing gear at Lukla, the route descends to Chaunrikharka before following the Dudh Koshi valley upstream to Phakding. The day's walking is relatively gentle, establishing the rhythm of the trek along the lower valley. Overnight at a lodge in Phakding, full board.
3Phakding to Namche Bazaar: Suspension Bridges, National Park Entrance & First Everest View (3,440m)Phakding to Namche Bazaar · Namche Bazaar · the trail · Monjo
The trail from Phakding crosses and re-crosses the Dudh Koshi on a series of high suspension bridges before reaching Monjo and the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park — established to protect the fragile high-altitude environment of the Khumbu. The ascent to Namche Bazaar steepens considerably beyond the park gate, and on clear days the first distant view of Mount Everest appears from the trail. Namche Bazaar (3,440m) is the principal trading settlement in the Khumbu, known for its Saturday market where traders from the lowlands and Tibetan yak caravans meet. The walk covers approximately 10 km in 5–6 hours. Overnight at a lodge in Namche, full board.
4Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar (3,440m): Khunde, Everest View Hotel & National Park MuseumNamche Bazaar · Everest View Hotel · Khunde Hospital · National Park Centre and Museum
A full rest day in Namche Bazaar (3,440m) allows for acclimatization before the altitude increases significantly. The town sits between two ridges and offers a range of lodges, tea houses, and shops. Optional walks include a visit to Khunde Hospital, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary, and an approximately one-hour climb to the Everest View Hotel, which provides sunset views across Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Everest. The National Park Centre and Museum, located just above the village, offers additional context on the ecology and history of the Sagarmatha region. Overnight at a lodge in Namche, full board.
5Namche Bazaar to Dole: High Valley Trail Through Rhododendron Forest (4,084m)Namche Bazaar · Dole · Mon La · Phortse Tenga to Dole
Leaving Namche on the main trail north, a short climb to a ridge crest opens views toward Everest and Lhotse. The route passes traders selling Tibetan handicrafts before reaching a crossroads high above the Dudh Koshi, where the Everest Base Camp path descends toward the river and this route turns to cross the Mon La. After Phortse Tenga, the trail climbs steeply through rhododendron and birch forest hung with mosses and lichens, arriving at Dole (4,084m). The day covers approximately 11 km in 5–6 hours. Overnight at a lodge in Dole, full board.
6Dole to Machhermo: Upper Valley Trail Past Seasonal Yak Pastures (4,410m)Dole to Machhermo · Machhermo · summer settlements
The trail from Dole climbs steadily along the valley side, the rhododendron forest giving way to scrub juniper at higher elevation. The path passes a number of summer settlements used when yaks are brought to high pastures for seasonal grazing. Cho Oyu is visible ahead, with Kantega and Thamserku prominent behind. The approximately 6 km walk of 4–5 hours arrives at Machhermo (4,410m). Overnight at a lodge in Machhermo, full board.
7Machhermo to Gokyo: Ngozumpa Glacier Approach and the Sacred Lakes (4,750m)Gokyo · Ngozumpa Glacier · Dudh Pokhari · Machhermo to Pangka · Gokyo Lakes
The route from Machhermo heads toward Pangka before descending slightly to follow a river running along the western edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's longest glacier. A steep rocky climb leads into the valley alongside the glacier, where the first of the Gokyo sacred lakes comes into view. The second lake marks an intersection with the trail crossing to Cho La, the glacier pass used on extended Khumbu circuits. The third lake, Dudh Pokhari, has the main Gokyo settlement on its eastern shore. Walking beside the lake, the summits of Cho Oyu (8,188m) and Gyachung Kang are reflected in the water. The walk covers approximately 7 km in 4–5 hours. Overnight at a lodge in Gokyo, full board.
