Great Wall at Huangyaguan and Huanghuacheng — 2 Days
Two-day hike across Ming-era fortifications north of Beijing, from Taipingzhai's stepped battlements to Huanghuacheng's lakeside ramparts.
This two-day hike covers two distinct sections of the Great Wall within 46 kilometers of Beijing. Huangyaguan, initially built in the 6th century and extensively rebuilt during the Ming era (14th–17th centuries), presents steep stepped battlements and mountain-ridge vistas. The second day moves through Xishuiyu village to Huanghuacheng, where the wall meets a reservoir and watchtowers overlook the water. Nights are spent in a local farmer's guesthouse. The route combines approximately 8 kilometers of walking across restored stonework with periods of rest and meals provided on site or in nearby villages.

Day by day
1Taipingzhai Hike: Huangyaguan's Stepped Battlements and Mountain RidgesTaipingzhai · Huangyaguan · your hotel · the wall · Xishuiyu · a local farmer's guesthouse · the guesthouse
Your guide meets you at your hotel at 9 am for the drive north to Huangyaguan. En route, you learn the structure's history: built initially during the Northern Qi dynasty in the 6th century, the section running 46 kilometers along mountain ridges north of Tianjin was substantially rebuilt under the Ming dynasty between the 14th and 17th centuries, with portions restored again between 1984 and 1986. On arrival at Taipingzhai, the hike begins along steeply stepped stone battlements. The ascent reveals views of the wall descending toward distant watchtowers and the surrounding mountains. Water and snacks are provided throughout the three-hour walk. At midday, your guide provides a picnic lunch on the wall itself. Afterward, you travel by private vehicle to Xishuiyu, a small farming village where you stay overnight at a local farmer's guesthouse. Dinner is served at the guesthouse.
2Xishuiyu to Huanghuacheng: Village Path to Lakeside WallHuanghuacheng · Xishuiyu village · parking area · Wangfujing shopping district
After breakfast at the guesthouse, you walk from Xishuiyu village upward toward Huanghuacheng. The guided walk covers roughly 8 kilometers and takes three to five hours. The route ascends through village terrain before reaching the wall itself at Huanghuacheng, where stone fortifications intersect with a reservoir. The watchtower at the top commands views over the water and surrounding landscape. The descent follows a narrow path—uneven terrain that requires careful footing. After completing the hike at the parking area, you return by private vehicle to Beijing. A traditional Chinese lunch in the Wangfujing shopping district concludes the tour.
