Great Wall: Jiankou to Mutianyu — 6-Mile Hiking Route
A full-day trek across two distinct sections of the Great Wall near Beijing, covering restored and original stonework over moderate terrain.
This single-day hike traverses a 6-mile stretch of the Great Wall connecting two contrasting sections. The route begins at Jiankou, where original Ming Dynasty masonry still crowns the ridgeline largely unrestored, then proceeds eastward toward Mutianyu, one of the better-preserved sections of the wall. The walk spans approximately 6–7 hours including photo stops and a picnic lunch taken on the wall itself. A private vehicle handles the 2.5-hour transfer from central Beijing to the trailhead and returns you to your hotel by early evening. The terrain is moderately challenging, with sustained elevation gain during the opening hour and sustained footing along the crest.
