Great Wall Trek: Huanghuacheng to Xishuiyu — 1 Day

A challenging 5–6 hour hike across restored and wild sections of the wall, north of Beijing, with reservoir views and unprotected ridge walking.

This day-long trek follows the Great Wall northward from Huanghuacheng to Xishuiyu, covering restored stonework and original unmaintained sections. The route climbs steeply across exposed ridgelines—no parapets on either side—with views over a mountain reservoir below. The middle passage traverses watery countryside and demands solid fitness and balance; hikers can reverse the route for an easier descent. The walk takes 5 to 6 hours total, with a picnic lunch eaten on the wall itself. Private vehicle transfer from Beijing takes approximately 90 minutes each way.

Highlights

  • Restored section of the Great Wall with original architecture and steep, unprotected climb from Huanghuacheng
  • Ridge-top passage above the Huanghuacheng Reservoir with bird's-eye views of water, wall, and mountain terrain
  • Wild, unmaintained original wall descent into Xishuiyu, testing footwork and nerve across terrain without modern safety features
  • Picnic lunch eaten on the wall itself during the trek

Private transfer from your Beijing hotel takes you 90 minutes north to Huanghuacheng, where the walk begins. The restored section rises steeply from the start—no guardrails on either side of the wall—requiring deliberate footing and caution. The ridge route crests at a high point offering panoramic views over the Huanghuacheng Reservoir and the wall's run through surrounding mountains. From there, the path descends into the original wild section toward Xishuiyu, where the wall is unrestored and terrain rougher, demanding careful downhill walking. Lunch is taken on the wall mid-trek. The total hiking time spans 5 to 6 hours. Upon reaching Xishuiyu, you are transferred back to your hotel in Beijing. Your English-speaking guide accompanies the entire walk, and entrance fees are included.
