Guangzhou: From Imperial Tombs to Colonial Riverfront — 1 Day

A full-day private tour covering 2,000 years of history: Chen Clan Academy, Nanyue Royal Tomb, Six Banyan Temple, and Shamian Island.

This one-day tour traces Guangzhou's evolution from ancient Han Dynasty power center to colonial port. A private guide meets you at your hotel and moves through the city's layered past: the Chen Clan Academy, built in the 1890s as a study hall for imperial examination candidates and now housing the Guangdong Folk Art Museum; the Nanyue Royal Tomb, a 2,000-year-old Western Han burial complex containing King Zhao Mo's jade burial suit—made of over 2,000 jade pieces stitched with silk thread, the only one of its kind in the world; the Six Banyan Temple, a Buddhist complex from 537 CE crowned by a 184-foot pagoda with 17 interior levels; and Shamian Island, a quiet oval islet on the Pearl River lined with neoclassical buildings that reflect British and French colonial influence. The tour includes a midday meal of traditional Cantonese dim sum at a local restaurant and returns you to your hotel by late afternoon.

Your private guide collects you from your hotel lobby and begins the day at Chen Clan Academy, an ornate 1890s building erected by the Chen family for ancestral worship and used by scholars preparing for imperial examinations. The structure displays intricate wood, brick, and ivory carvings throughout its interior beams, ridges, walls, and columns. The building now houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, its galleries filled with traditional embroidery, Chinese ink paintings, rare print arts, and ceramics from across Guangdong Province. Next, the Museum of the Nanyue King opens the Nanyue Royal Tomb, a 100-square-meter complex dating to the Western Han Dynasty two millennia ago. Inside, wall paintings and cultural relics surround King Zhao Mo's burial garment—a robe assembled from more than 2,000 jade pieces connected by silk thread, a singular artifact with no match anywhere in the world. Midday brings a traditional Cantonese dim sum lunch at a local restaurant before moving on to Six Banyan Temple, a Buddhist site founded in 537 CE. The temple's main hall holds three copper Buddhist statues, each 6 meters high, the largest of their kind in the province. Outside, the Flower Pagoda rises 184 feet with colorful exterior carvings and 17 interior levels, though it appears to have only nine from street level—a visual illusion created when the structure was cast during the Yuan Dynasty between 1271 and 1368. The tour concludes at Shamian Island, an oval islet on the Pearl River's White Goose Pool. The island's quiet streets showcase neoclassical buildings bearing British and French architectural marks, a legacy of colonial trade. Designated a state-protected historical site, Shamian Island ranks among Guangzhou's nine most significant landmarks. Your guide then returns you to your hotel.
