Hampta Pass Trek — 4 Days, 14,000 Feet
High-altitude pass crossing above Manali with river valleys and snow fields
The Hampta Pass trek is a four-day crossing in the Manali region of Himachal Pradesh, ascending to 14,000 ft at the pass itself. The route begins in the pine forests around Manali, moving through river valleys and meadows before climbing steeply to the pass, then descending back to base. The trek is accessible to those new to trekking while still presenting real altitude and exposure. Snow fields and views of Deo Tibba peak mark the approach to the pass. The itinerary includes camping at Chikka and Balu Ka Ghera, with the main climbing day devoted entirely to the pass ascent and return.
Best time to go: May to October
Highlights

Day by day
1Manali Base to Chikka ValleyManali Base · Chikka Valley · Manali to Hampta Dam · Chikka Valley campsite
The trek begins in Manali. After reporting at the base camp and a midday departure, a 30-kilometer drive (approximately two hours) heads north toward Hampta Dam. The road passes through dense pine forest with exposed rock faces and scattered walnut and oak trees. The route crosses several streams before reaching Chikka via the small villages of Jobra, Prerni, and Aleo Nallah Stream. Two wooden footbridges lead to the campsite, which sits beside large boulders and a waterfall at 3,080 meters. Overnight accommodation is in shared tents with sleeping bags and mattresses provided.
2Chikka to Balu Ka Ghera MeadowChikka · Balu Ka Ghera Meadow · Jwara
An early-morning departure from Chikka leads into a six-kilometer trek of five to six hours. The trail follows the river's left bank through Jwara, a sheltered valley with scattered waterfalls and open meadows. Dhauladhar peaks remain visible throughout the day's walk. The terrain is moderate, climbing gradually as elevation gains from 3,080 to 3,628 meters (11,900 feet). Balu Ka Ghera is a flat camping area surrounded by mountains. The second night is spent at camp, allowing time for acclimatization before the following day's ascent.
3Hampta Pass Summit from Balu Ka GheraHampta Pass · Balu Ka Ghera · Deo Tibba peak
This is the trek's defining day—the most challenging and rewarding. The nine-hour, eight-kilometer round-trip demands an early 7 a.m. start and full commitment.
From Balu Ka Ghera, the trail begins gently, following the river for roughly an hour before the gradient sharpens considerably. The path then climbs directly toward Hampta Pass, where concentration and steady effort become essential. Around four to five hours in, the first plateau emerges, bringing Deo Tibba peak into full view—a landmark that signals your approach to the higher terrain.
The final push involves steep ridges that demand focus and physical reserves. The vertical climbing is unrelenting but purposeful. At 4,268 meters, Hampta Pass delivers the reward: dramatic views across the high-altitude landscape that justify every step of the ascent.
The descent proves slightly trickier than the climb, as is often the case. Snow conditions can alter the descent's difficulty, so adaptability matters here. After returning to Balu Ka Ghera, you'll rest at the campsite, reflecting on a day that tested and transformed you.
4Balu Ka Ghera to ManaliBalu Ka Ghera to Chikka · Chikka to Manali
The final day reverses the route, beginning with a six-kilometer trek back to Chikka (approximately four hours). After arrival, the group boards a vehicle for the two-hour drive south through Jobra and back to Manali, arriving in late afternoon or early evening. The trek concludes with return to Manali base.
