India's Golden Triangle: Delhi, Agra & Jaipur — 8 Days

Delhi to Agra to Jaipur with rural Rajasthan village stay and cultural projects

This eight-day route moves through three of northern India's largest cities and into rural Rajasthan, linking the administrative capital of Delhi, the Mughal monument at Agra, and Jaipur, the planned city built to Hindu architectural principles. The itinerary connects these points by private transport, with a two-night detour into village life at Dhula. Along the way, the trip incorporates partnerships with local social enterprises — a youth-led walking project in Delhi, a women's cooperative workshop in Jaipur — making the cultural encounters reciprocal rather than extractive. This suits photographers, historians of Mughal and colonial architecture, and travellers looking for a structured introduction to northern India without the pace of independent logistics.

Highlights

  • Youth-led walk through Delhi backstreets with the City Walk project, supporting at-risk young guides
  • Taj Mahal at sunrise from the grounds in Agra
  • Fatehpur Sikri, the sixteenth-century Mughal capital, now a preserved archaeological site
  • Abhaneri Stepwell, a geometric water-harvesting structure of the Mughal era
  • Two nights in a tented camp in Dhula Village, Rajasthan, with options for village cricket, cycling, and informal observation of rural life
  • Block-printing workshop with women artisans from the Anoothi Project near Jaipur
  • Amber Fort, combining Hindu and Muslim architectural styles above Jaipur
  • City Palace and Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) in Jaipur's grid-planned old city

Day by day

1Arrival in Delhiairport · Delhi hotel
Arrival transfer from the airport is provided through the Women on Wheels project. The remainder of the day is unstructured, allowing time to settle into the Delhi hotel and acclimate to the city's pace and rhythm.
2Delhi's Backstreets and Old CityDelhi's backstreets · Old Delhi · Red Fort area · Delhi to Agra
A guided walk through the backstreets of Delhi with the City Walk project, a youth-led social enterprise, offers a working perspective on the city beyond the main tourist routes. The walk moves through residential areas and leads into Old Delhi, where Mughal markets, historic monuments, and colonial-era architecture cluster around the Red Fort area. Transport to Agra follows in the afternoon, roughly a four-hour drive southeast.
3Taj Mahal and Agra's Imperial SitesTaj Mahal · I'timad-ud-Daulah · Agra Fort
Sunrise at the Taj Mahal precedes exploration of this seventeenth-century marble mausoleum. Afternoon visits include the I'timad-ud-Daulah and Agra Fort, showcasing Mughal architecture across both eras.
4Fatehpur Sikri, Stepwells, and Village SettlementFatehpur Sikri · Abhaneri Stepwell · Dhula Village
The drive from Agra southwest to Jaipur passes through Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned sixteenth-century capital of the Mughal emperor Akbar, now a UNESCO archaeological site with intact palaces, courtyards, and a mosque. The Abhaneri Stepwell, one of the largest examples of this architectural type, demonstrates the engineering of water storage and retrieval in pre-modern India — a geometric descent of narrow stone flights into the earth. The afternoon drive continues to Dhula Village in rural Rajasthan, where accommodation is in a tented camp with beds, simple en suite bathrooms, and common fire areas. The village setting allows for informal interaction with residents, optional cricket matches, and cycling through surrounding farmland and villages.
5Block Printing Workshop and Arrival in JaipurJaipur · Dhula Village · Anoothi Project
Depart Dhula Village for Jaipur, stopping en route at the Anoothi Project to learn traditional block printing from women artisans. Arrive in Jaipur, built according to Hindu architectural principles with its distinctive grid-based layout.
6Jaipur's Forts, Palaces, and City StructureJaipur · Amber Fort · City Palace · Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) · local families
The day begins with a visit to Amber Fort, perched on a ridge above the city, a fortified palace complex blending Hindu and Muslim architectural elements across multiple levels and courtyards. Afternoon activities include the City Palace, a functioning royal residence partially open to visitors, and Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), a distinctive five-story pink sandstone screen facing the main market square. Optional add-on activities available include guided cycling tours of the city and cooking classes with local families.
