Japan's Oku-Nikko Region: Waterfalls, Ropeway & Mountain Scenery — 2 Days
A two-day circuit through Nikko's alpine highlands, connecting waterfalls, a heritage dam, and roadside stations via local roads and cable transit.
This two-day route moves through the Oku-Nikko region of Tochigi Prefecture, an area defined by the convergence of high alpine meadow, waterfall chains, and engineered water management. The itinerary hinges on two stops at Roadside Stations—newer visitor centers that anchor the route—and passes through Marunuma Dam, a structure designated as an important cultural property for its early-twentieth-century engineering. The loop includes transit via the Nikko-Shiranesan Ropeway, visits to Yu-daki Falls and Kegon Falls, and a walking route across Senjogahara, a high-altitude wetland plateau. Most transfers are short by car between major stops.
Highlights
- Nikko-Shiranesan Ropeway: a 5-minute cable ascent across 2 kilometers of alpine terrain
