Jeju Island Coastal Loop: Four Days by Bike

Circle South Korea's volcanic island on a 230km dedicated coastal bike path, including a ferry crossing to Udo Island — 4 days

Jeju Island, a volcanic landmass 60 kilometers south of the Korean peninsula, has spent the last two decades building a comprehensive bike path that circles its 230-kilometer perimeter. The route moves through distinct coastlines: the western flank toward Seogwipo rises into lava plateaus above terracotta cliffs; the southern edge faces open ocean; the eastern stretch holds fishing villages and tidal flats. A dedicated support vehicle follows throughout. The terrain is consistently manageable — no climbing above sea level — and the path itself is separated from car traffic, though not isolated from it. Between riding days, you'll spend a night on Udo Island, a small island ferry-accessible from the northeast coast, where a shorter loop allows recovery before the final return to Jeju City.

Highlights

  • Ride the full 230-kilometer Jeju Coastal Bike Path, a dedicated two-lane route built specifically for cyclists and kept separate from vehicle traffic
  • Hike Seongsan Ilchulbong, a tuff cone formed by volcanic eruption, with a two-hour hike offering views across the island.
  • Ferry to Udo Island and complete a shorter bike loop around its perimeter, returning by boat to the main island
  • Pass through Seogwipo and its surroundings on the island's south side, where the path runs directly alongside the ocean
  • Cycle the northeastern coastal section between Seongsan and Jeju City, moving through rural fishing areas and agricultural plains

Day by day

1Jeju City to Seogwipo: Western Coastal RouteJeju City · Seogwipo · island's dedicated bike path · restaurant along the route · low coastal terrain
The tour begins in central Jeju City, where you meet your guide and support team. The morning ride runs south and west along the island's dedicated bike path, hugging the coast for approximately 2.5 hours. The path is flat and well-maintained; ocean views dominate the left side. You'll stop for lunch at a restaurant along the route before continuing the afternoon segment toward Seogwipo, riding another three hours through low coastal terrain. By late afternoon you reach Seogwipo, a town on the island's southern coast, where you'll rest at your accommodation before dinner.
2Seogwipo to Seongsan: Long Ride Across the SouthSeogwipo · Seongsan · the bike path
The second day is the tour's longest effort — 90 kilometers of continuous riding along the southern and southeastern coast. After breakfast and final checks, you ride northeast from Seogwipo, following the bike path as it traces the cliff-backed coastline. Lunch occurs roughly midway through the afternoon. The route then pushes through afternoon light toward Seongsan, a fishing village on the island's eastern flank, arriving by late afternoon. This day involves sustained effort with minimal climbing, though the distance alone will signal the day's demands. You'll rest and dine in Seongsan.
3Seongsan Ilchulbong Hike and Udo Island LoopSeongsan Ilchulbong · Udo Island · ferry port
The third day shifts rhythm. After breakfast, you hike Seongsan Ilchulbong, a volcanic tuff cone that rises from the coastline — a two-hour round-trip ascent with views across the island. You'll return for lunch, then travel to the nearby ferry port. A short cruise delivers you to Udo Island, a small island across a narrow strait. Once there, you complete a leisurely bike loop around Udo's perimeter — approximately two hours of easy riding on flat terrain — before returning by ferry to the main island in late afternoon. The remaining time allows rest before dinner.
4Seongsan to Jeju City: Northeast Passage and ReturnSeongsan to Jeju City · Jeju City
The final day moves west along the island's northern coast, returning you to Jeju City over approximately 2.5 hours of morning riding. After a midday lunch, a brief afternoon segment of 1.5 hours completes the loop, bringing you back to the city center where the tour concludes.
