Jeju Island: Hallasan Summit, Olle Trail & Coastal Villages — 4 Days

Trek South Korea's highest peak and walk a 13-kilometer coastal trail through traditional villages and volcanic terrain

This four-day itinerary moves through Jeju's core geological and cultural landmarks on foot. You'll ascend Hallasan at 1,947 meters via one of two established routes, walk the Olle Trail Route 7 past sea stacks and seasonal wildflower fields, visit Seongeup Folk Village to see traditional lava-stone architecture, and meet the island's Haenyeo—the women free-divers who have worked these waters for generations. The pacing allows time for a traditional jjimjilbang spa and local meals, including Jeju's signature black pork barbecue. Most days involve hiking; the tour suits active travelers with moderate to demanding fitness.

Day by day

1Manjanggul Lava Tube, Seongsan Ilchulbong & Meeting the HaenyeoManjanggul Lava Tube · Seongsan Ilchulbong · by the sea
Begin underground in Manjanggul Lava Tube, one of the world's longest and most extensive lava tunnels. Walk approximately one kilometer through surreal rock formations and ancient lava flows to understand the volcanic geology that shaped Jeju. Travel east to Seongsan Ilchulbong, a UNESCO-listed tuff cone formed by volcanic eruption, and hike the short but steep trail to its summit for panoramic ocean views across the straits. In late afternoon, meet the island's legendary Haenyeo—women free-divers who have harvested seafood without air equipment for generations. Sample their freshly caught catch prepared by the sea. Total walking distance for the day: approximately 2 to 3 kilometers.
2Seongeup Folk Village & Olle Trail Route 7 Coastal WalkSeongeup Folk Village · Olle Trail Route 7
Spend the morning at Seongeup Folk Village, where traditional Jeju architecture—lava-stone houses, Confucian shrines, and guardian totem poles—remains intact along narrow lanes. The village offers a clear view of how islanders lived before modern development. In early afternoon, move south to begin Olle Trail Route 7, one of Jeju's signature long-distance walks. This 13-kilometer coastal route winds past dramatic sea cliffs and the distinctive sea stack Oedolgae, then passes through forested sections of the Subong-ro nature trail. Depending on season, the path passes through canola flowers in spring, wild radish blossoms, royal azaleas, and camellias. Total walking distance: approximately 13 kilometers.
3Hallasan Summit Ascent & Jjimjilbang RecoveryHallasan · Baengnokdam · a traditional jjimjilbang spa · a grill house
This is a full-day mountain climb. Hallasan, at 1,947 meters, is South Korea's highest peak. Choose between two established routes: the Seongpanak Trail (19.2 kilometers round trip, moderate difficulty) or the Gwaneumsa Trail (17.6 kilometers round trip, steeper and more demanding). Both routes pass through diverse ecosystems—lush forest giving way to volcanic rock fields—before reaching the summit crater, Baengnokdam, which contains a small crater lake. The ascent takes most of the morning and early afternoon; descent typically requires two to three hours. After returning to base elevation, visit a traditional jjimjilbang spa—a Korean bathing and rest facility—to soothe tired muscles. In the evening, celebrate your achievement with Jeju black pork barbecue, a local specialty served fresh and smoky at a grill house.
4Dongmun Traditional Market & DepartureDongmun Traditional Market · airport
Your final morning centers on Dongmun Traditional Market, Jeju's oldest and most active market. Spend an hour walking through stalls selling local snacks, hallabong citrus juice, dried seafood, handmade rice cakes, and regional crafts. The market offers a concentrated view of what Jeju produces and how locals shop. Afterward, transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
