Kareri Lake Trek — 3 Days

Alpine lake at 9,620 feet in Himachal Pradesh, reached from Dharamsala across high-altitude meadows and coniferous forest

Kareri Lake sits at 9,620 feet in the upper Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh, a glacial lake surrounded by open alpine grasslands and stands of deodar, fir, and spruce forest. The three-day trek begins in Dharamkot village, climbs steadily through dense pine forest to Kareri village, then follows the Liund stream northward across a rocky valley floor to the lake. The return route descends through dense forest back toward Ghera village and Dharamkot. The trek takes you through varying elevations, with ascent on the first and second days and descent on day three. Accommodation is tent-based at Kareri village and at the lake itself. All vegetarian meals are provided throughout, along with camping equipment, a qualified trek leader, and forest permits.

Highlights

  • Trek from Dharamkot to Kareri village — 4–5 hours through dense pine forest with forest canopy opening onto alpine meadows
  • Walk along the Liund stream gorge — narrow coniferous-lined valley with river crossings via boulders and temporary bridges
  • Arrival at Kareri Lake, 9,620 feet — glacial water surrounded by treeless high-altitude grassland and distant mountain slopes
  • Alpine meadow camping — verdant grassland at high elevation, open views of the surrounding ridges
  • Descent through deodar and coniferous forest — return route through increasingly dense forest cover as elevation drops toward Ghera

Day by day

1Dharamkot to Kareri VillageDharamkot · Dharamkot to Kareri village · Kareri village campsite
The trek begins at Dharamkot, a small settlement in Kangra District. From here, the trail climbs steadily toward the Kareri village campsite, a route of approximately 4 to 5 hours. Most of the ascent winds through dense pine forest, with the path climbing gradually until the final section, which steepens noticeably. The forest cover remains thick throughout, creating a shaded passage through the lower elevations. As the trail gains altitude, it emerges into more open terrain, with views across the surrounding ridges beginning to open. The campsite sits in meadow country, established before the forest transitions fully to alpine grassland. Tents are pitched in the designated camp area, set within natural surroundings.
2Kareri Village to Kareri LakeKareri Village to Kareri Lake · Kareri Lake · Liund stream
From Kareri village, the route descends initially, then climbs alongside the narrow Liund stream. The path follows the stream's course northward, moving through a valley bounded by steep mountain slopes on the eastern side and the running water on the west. The terrain transitions from forest to increasingly rocky, muddy ground as the trail climbs. Coniferous and deciduous trees line the lower sections; as altitude increases, deciduous species thin and conifers dominate. The vegetation thins further with each gain in elevation. The trail crosses the rocky river using boulders and temporary bridges—a straightforward but steep-sided passage. Beyond the river, the trail continues upward across rocky terrain and open meadow toward the lake. Kareri Lake lies at approximately 9,620 feet, surrounded by treeless alpine grassland that slopes gently away from the water. The campsite sits in these verdant meadows at the lake's margin. The day's hiking will take you to the Kareri Lake.
3Kareri Lake to Dharamkot via GheraKareri Lake to Dharamkot via Ghera · Ghera · Ghera village
The descent from Kareri Lake retraces the route downslope, initially through open meadow and then alongside the Liund stream. As elevation decreases, forest cover returns and thickens progressively—first sparse conifers, then mixed coniferous-deciduous forest, then denser growth dominated by tall deodar and pine stands. The trail descends through Ghera village, which sits at an intermediate elevation before the final slopes back toward Dharamkot. The lower sections of the descent move through increasingly lush forest, with less exposure to high-altitude terrain. From Ghera, transportation is arranged back to McLeodganj or Dharamsala. This final day typically takes 4–5 hours of trekking depending on pace and individual acclimatization.
