Khustai National Park & Mongol Nomadic Camp — 2 Days, 1 Night

120km from Ulaanbaatar: Przewalski wild horses, traditional nomadic performance, and mountain sanctuary

This two-day journey takes you 120 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar to Khustai National Park, a mountain sanctuary where Przewalski wild horses—known locally as Takhi—have been reestablished after near-total extinction. The trip opens with a morning performance at Mongol Nomadic Camp, 60km from the capital, where you witness demonstrations of nomadic life, traditional instruments, and dairy practices. You then drive to Khustai itself, spend an afternoon at the ger camp and information center learning the park's ecology and horse reintroduction history, and end the day observing the approximately 350 wild horses descending from the mountains to water at streams as temperatures drop. A second morning concludes with the return to the capital after breakfast.

Highlights

  • Przewalski wild horses (Takhi) in their native habitat at Khustai National Park — approximately 350 individuals reintroduced in the early 1990s after extinction in 1954
  • Traditional nomadic performance at Mongol Nomadic Camp — demonstrations of nomadic lifestyle, music, and dairy production
  • Evening wildlife observation in Khustai as horses descend from mountains to streams following the day's heat
  • Khustai National Park information center detailing the region's fauna and horse reintroduction program
  • Overnight stay in a traditional Mongolian ger within the national park

Following the show, enjoy a Mongolian lunch at the camp. In the afternoon, drive approximately one hour to Khustai National Park, situated 120 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar among mountains that remain largely unaffected by human development. Settle into the ger camp and visit the local information center, which documents the park's fauna and the history of Przewalski horse reintroduction. In the evening, drive deeper into the park's interior to observe wild horses in their habitat. As temperatures cool after sunset, the approximately 350 horses descend from the mountains to water themselves at nearby streams.
