Khustai National Park: Wild Horses & Mountain Refuge — Day Tour from Ulaanbaatar
120 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar to observe reintroduced Przewalski horses in their native mountain habitat
Khustai National Park sits 120 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar, a protected mountain range where approximately 350 Przewalski horses—known locally as Takhi—roam in the open steppe. These animals, extinct in the wild since 1954, were reintroduced to Mongolia in the early 1990s through an international restoration effort led by Dutch conservationists. A day visit pairs the two-hour drive from the capital with morning or late-afternoon observation of the horses as they gather near streams, plus a briefing at the park's information center on the species and local wildlife.
Highlights
- Observe approximately 350 Przewalski horses (Takhi) in their reintroduced habitat within protected mountain terrain
- Visit Khustai's information center to learn the species' extinction and reintroduction history since the 1990s
- Drive through unfarmed mountain landscape 120 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar to reach the national park boundary
- Photograph wild horses during peak activity periods at dawn or near sunset when they approach local streams
Day by day
1Khustai National Park: Przewalski Horses & Mountain RefugeUlaanbaatar · protected mountain range · ger camp · Khustai National Park entrance and its information center
Depart Ulaanbaatar in early morning with a local guide and driver, traveling westward toward Khustai National Park. The two-hour drive covers 120 kilometers through changing terrain, arriving at the park entrance and its information center. The center provides context on the Przewalski horse recovery program—how the species disappeared from the wild by 1954 and was successfully reintroduced to Mongolia starting in the early 1990s through cooperative international efforts. From there, drive deeper into the protected mountain range to locate the approximately 350 horses now inhabiting the park. The animals are most reliably sighted in early morning or near sunset when they move toward local streams to water. After observing the horses and the unfarmed mountain landscape that surrounds them, return to a ger camp for lunch before heading back to Ulaanbaatar.
