Knuckles to Ella: Six Days Across Sri Lanka's Central Highland Ranges

From the UNESCO ridges of Knuckles Mountain Range through Adam's Peak and Horton Plains to Bambarakanda Falls — 6 days of high-altitude trekking

This six-day trek traverses four distinct mountain zones of Sri Lanka's Central Highlands, beginning in Kandy and ending in the hill town of Ella. The route crosses the Knuckles Mountain Range, summits Adam's Peak (Sri Pada, 2,243 m) alongside pilgrims on its sacred trail, crosses the grasslands of Horton Plains National Park, and descends to Bambarakanda Falls, at 263 metres the country's tallest waterfall. Throughout the trek, local guides lead the way, and overnight stays are in small family-run lodges and guesthouses in the villages along the route. Meals are prepared in local kitchens; picnic lunches fuel the trekking days. The itinerary is neither a resort stay nor a mountaineering expedition — rather, a continuous walking journey through high terrain that connects rural communities, montane forest, grassland plateau, and waterfall gorges.

Day by day

1Arrival in Kandy & Village Walk in Knuckles FoothillsKandy · Knuckles foothills · village homes · Knuckles peaks
Meet your trekking guide in Kandy and transfer into the Knuckles foothills. Before settling at the lodge, a gentle introductory walk winds through a quiet rural village—the perfect introduction to Sri Lanka's highlands. The trail meanders past terraced paddy fields where farmers still work with water buffalo, through small forest patches alive with bird calls, and along sparkling streams where children bathe and play. Stop at village homes to chat with residents, learn about their spice gardens, and enjoy lunch freshly prepared in a family kitchen. As afternoon fades, continue up into the mountains to your simple but scenic lodge set amidst the Knuckles peaks. The views stretch across ridgelines, and the mountain quiet settles in as dusk falls. Dinner is served at the lodge, and you'll spend your first night surrounded by peaks and stars.
2Knuckles Summit Trek Through Cardamom ForestKnuckles summit · the trail · the lodge
An early breakfast precedes the ascent to the Knuckles summit, the most well-known peak of this UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The trail begins gently through cardamom forests, gradually steepening as it climbs cloud-wrapped ridges. With each switchback, new vistas unfold across valleys lined with villages and endless layers of green. The summit offers panoramic views across the Central Highlands, extending to the east coast on clear days. Your guide shares stories of hidden caves, medicinal plants, and legends tied to these peaks. A picnic lunch sustains you on the trail before the descent begins in the afternoon. Returning to the lodge, you'll find time to rest before dinner shared with fellow trekkers. The crisp mountain air and the satisfaction of the day's climb make for deep sleep.
3Descent to Adam's Peak via Tea Country and KitulgalaKitulgala · Knuckles · small guesthouse in the foothills of Adam's Peak · foothills of Adam's Peak
Leaving the Knuckles, the transfer vehicle descends through tea plantations and forest toward Adam's Peak. En route, a stop is made in Kitulgala, a riverside village in lush terrain. An optional white-water rafting excursion is available for those interested. The journey continues to a small guesthouse in the foothills of Adam's Peak. The setting here mixes pilgrimage atmosphere with mountain freshness. Dinner is served early, as the ascent of Adam's Peak begins in the middle of the night.

The climb to Sri Pada (Adam's Peak, 2,243 m) begins around 1:00 AM. The trekker ascends thousands of stone steps under starlight, joining pilgrims on this long-established sacred trail. At dawn, the summit temple is reached. The sunrise casts the peak's triangular shadow across the valleys below — a distinctive optical phenomenon visible only from the summit in the early morning. After time at the summit, the descent returns to the guesthouse for breakfast and rest. The afternoon transfer moves to Nuwara Eliya, a colonial-era hill town with rose gardens and cool mountain climate. Check-in is at a small hotel in town for dinner and overnight stay.
5Horton Plains National Park Trek to OhiyaHorton Plains National Park · Ohiya · World's End · Baker's Falls
After breakfast, the group enters Horton Plains National Park, a plateau of montane grassland and cloud forest. The trail winds through mist-laden grasslands dotted with purple rhododendrons, past streams where sambar deer graze, and through dense patches of cloud forest draped in moss. Key features include World's End, a dramatic escarpment with an 880-metre vertical drop, and Baker's Falls. From the plains, the trek continues to the mountain village of Ohiya via quieter paths that skirt valleys and tea estates. The evening lodge in Ohiya is perched above the valleys with views at sunset of rolling hills fading into silhouette. Dinner is prepared by the lodge hosts.
