Langtang Valley & Gosaikunda Lakes Trek — 15 Days

Kathmandu to Kyanjin Gompa, Gosaikunda (4,380m), and the Helambu descent — 15 days through Nepal's central Himalayas

This 15-day trek in Nepal's central Himalayas links two distinct high-altitude destinations: the Langtang Valley, running northeast of Kathmandu toward the Tibetan border, and the sacred Gosaikunda Lakes at 4,380 meters. The route begins with a 120-kilometer drive from Kathmandu along the Trisuli River to Syabrubesi at 1,550 meters, then climbs steadily through rhododendron and pine forest into the Langtang Valley proper. The valley section centers on Kyanjin Gompa at 3,860 meters — an active monastery surrounded by some of the most recognizable peaks in this part of Nepal, including Langtang Lirung at 7,227 meters. An optional day hike to Tserko Ri at 5,033 meters provides a 360-degree panorama over the Langtang range and several frozen alpine lakes. Langtang Village, completely destroyed by an avalanche triggered by the 2015 earthquake and subsequently rebuilt, sits along the approach trail and carries considerable historical weight. From the Langtang Valley, the route pivots west toward Gosaikunda via Thulo Syabru and Sing Gompa — the latter village home to one of the oldest cheese factories in the region, established at Chandanbari. The final ascent to Gosaikunda is short in distance but steep and thin in air, arriving at a cluster of alpine lakes held sacred by both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. According to Hindu belief, the lakes were created by Lord Shiva, and the site draws large numbers of pilgrims during the Janai Purnima festival. The descent returns through Laurebina, Cholangpati, and Deurali before reaching Dhunche Bazar, passing a riverside Shiva temple on the final stretch. The trek covers moderate to strenuous terrain across its 15 days, with the most demanding sections at altitude above Laurebina and on the optional Tserko Ri ascent. Throughout, settlements along the route reflect Tamang culture — Tibetan-influenced in language, religious practice, and architecture — providing consistent cultural context alongside the mountain scenery.

At Trisuli Bazaar, the Manaslu Massif, Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal, and the Langtang range come into view overhead. The road ends at Syabrubesi, the trek's starting point at 1,550 meters.
3Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel: First Day on the TrailSyabrubesi to Lama Hotel
The first day of trekking follows a relatively moderate gradient through forest and river beds, passing small villages along the way. The trail reaches Lama Hotel by the end of the day, providing an introduction to the valley terrain ahead.
4Lama Hotel to Mundu via Ghodatabela and Langtang Village (13km / 3,540m)Mundu · Ghodatabela · Langtang Village
The trail climbs through pine and rhododendron forest, reaching Ghodatabela — whose name translates to 'horse stable' — after roughly three hours. Continuing toward Langtang Village, the route passes the site of the settlement that was completely destroyed by an avalanche following the 2015 earthquake and has since been rebuilt. Views of Langtang Lirung and Gangchenpo peak accompany the final stretch to Mundu at 3,540 meters. The full day covers approximately 13 kilometers over 6 to 7 hours of trekking.
5Mundu to Kyanjin Gompa (5km / 3,860m)Mundu to Kyanjin Gompa · Kyanjin Valley · Langsisha Kharka
A shorter day of 5 kilometers and 2 to 3 hours of hiking reaches Kyanjin Gompa at 3,860 meters. Arriving with time to spare, the itinerary allows for exploration of the Kyanjin Valley or an optional hike toward Langsisha Kharka. Kyanjin Gompa is an active monastery set against a broad backdrop of Langtang peaks.
6Kyanjin Gompa: Tserko Ri Ascent (5,033m)Tserko Ri
The day centers on the ascent of Tserko Ri at 5,033 meters — a demanding climb that gains significant altitude from the 3,860-meter base. From the summit, the view extends 360 degrees across Himalayan peaks, the full length of the Langtang Valley, and several frozen alpine lakes. The effort required is considerable given the elevation and gradient, but the panoramic reach from the top is among the widest available on this route.
7Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (18km / 2,480m)Kyanjin Gompa · Lama Hotel
The route retraces the outward trail downhill to Lama Hotel, crossing streams and passing back through forest over 5 to 6 hours and 18 kilometers. The descent follows the demanding effort of the previous day at Tserko Ri.
8Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru via Pahiro Village (9.8km / 2,210m)Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru via Pahiro Village
The trail descends back through familiar terrain before branching onto the connecting route toward Gosaikunda. The day drops to Pahiro village and then climbs to Thulo Syabru at 2,210 meters, covering roughly 9.8 kilometers over 5 to 6 hours. This junction marks the transition from the Langtang Valley section to the Gosaikunda approach.

Departing Sing Gompa, the trail passes through Cholangpati — a small settlement with a handful of tea houses — before reaching Laurebina at 3,925 meters. Laurebina serves as the staging point for the final ascent to Gosaikunda the following day. The day covers 6 kilometers over 4 to 5 hours.
11Laurebina to Gosaikunda Lakes (4km / 4,380m)Laurebina to Gosaikunda Lakes · Gosaikunda Lakes
Although only 4 kilometers in distance, the ascent from Laurebina to Gosaikunda is the most physically demanding section of the trek. The trail climbs steeply from the village, and the reduced oxygen at this altitude extends the effort across 4 to 5 hours. The Gosaikunda Lakes sit at 4,380 meters and are considered sacred in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions; in Hinduism, they are associated with Lord Shiva and draw large numbers of pilgrims during the Janai Purnima festival. Overnight at the lake.
