Langtang Valley Trek, Nepal — 10 Days

Kathmandu to Kyanjin Gompa (3,860m) and Tserko Ri (5,033m): a 10-day circuit through Tamang villages, high-altitude forest, and the Langtang Himalayan range

The Langtang Valley sits roughly 120 kilometers north of Kathmandu, yet sees a fraction of the trekking traffic that moves through the Everest and Annapurna corridors. This 10-day itinerary covers the full valley circuit — from the roadhead at Syabrubesi (1,550m) to the monastery settlement of Kyanjin Gompa (3,860m) — and includes an ascent of Tserko Ri (5,033m) for panoramic views across the Langtang range and its frozen alpine lakes. The approach from Syabrubesi moves through dense pine and rhododendron forest along the Langtang River, passing through a series of Tamang villages whose architecture, monasteries, and daily customs reflect strong Tibetan cultural influence. Langtang Village itself carries particular historical weight: a 2015 earthquake-triggered avalanche destroyed the settlement entirely, and the rebuilt village stands as both a working community and a record of that event. The upper valley opens at Kyanjin Gompa, an ancient monastery that functions as the trek's high camp and acclimatization base. From here, day hikes reach Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) and Tserko Ri (5,033m), the latter offering an unobstructed 360-degree view of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Gangchenpo, and surrounding peaks. The descent retraces the valley floor or, on the final trekking day, follows an alternative ridge route via Sherpa Gaun back to Syabrubesi. The itinerary is graded moderate to challenging, with altitude gain the primary physical variable rather than technical terrain. No prior high-altitude trekking experience is required, though reasonable base fitness is assumed. Trekking permits — Langtang National Park entry and a TIMS card — are included, as is full-board accommodation in teahouses throughout the trek and an English-speaking guide for the full duration.
