Laos and Vietnam by Bicycle: Ten Days Through River, Forest, and Highland Villages

Nam Ou River boat journey and mountain cycling from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, 10 days

This 10-day route combines cycling and river travel across Laos and northern Vietnam, moving through limestone terrain, ethnic minority villages, and primary forest. The journey begins in Luang Prabang, descends the Nam Ou River by boat through remote jungle, then climbs into the mountains of Vietnam's northwest, crossing through the Muong Thanh Valley near Dien Bien Phu before descending into the lowlands toward Cuc Phuong National Park and Hanoi. Days mix challenging mountain passes with river and forest passages; the riding covers tarmac and dirt roads with significant elevation change and technical terrain. English-speaking guides and private vehicle support are included throughout.

Day by day

1Arrival in Luang PrabangLuang Prabang · Khaiphaen Restaurant
Meet the local team for a short ride around Luang Prabang at sunset to adjust to conditions in Southeast Asia and gauge fitness before the road begins. An informal briefing follows at Khaiphaen Restaurant, a vocational training establishment where dinner and an overview of the 10-day route take place. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
2Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw: Nam Ou River DescentNong Khiaw · Nam Ou River · Pak Mong village
After a one-hour transfer, cycling begins along the Nam Ou River toward Pak Mong village, where lunch breaks the 70-kilometer ride. In the afternoon, limestone mountains rise progressively more dramatic, marking the entry into increasingly remote terrain. The landscape shifts noticeably as the river canyon narrows. Overnight in Nong Khiaw.
3Nam Ou River Boat Journey to Muang KhuaNam Ou River · Muang Khua · isolated villages
A four to five hour boat ride follows the Nam Ou through a remote stretch of primary forest, the river channel narrowing between high walls of jungle. Stops include visits to isolated villages accessible only by water. The journey covers terrain impossible by road. Overnight in Muang Khua.
4Muang Khua to Vietnam Border and Dien Bien PhuMuang Khua to Vietnam Border · Dien Bien Phu
A challenging 60-kilometer ride carries the route across the Laos-Vietnam border, most of the distance running through primary forest where hill tribe villages interrupt the canopy. After crossing into Vietnam, a private vehicle transfers to Dien Bien Phu, situated in the Muong Thanh Valley—an area known for rice cultivation and Tai ethnic minority culture. The city is known throughout the world as a battlefield in the first Indochina War, an Asian version of Waterloo. Overnight in Dien Bien Phu.
5Dien Bien Phu to Tuan Giao Through Tai VillagesDien Bien Phu to Tuan Giao · mountain pass · Tuan Giao guesthouse
An 80-kilometer ride passes through numerous Tai ethnic villages on the route from Dien Bien Phu to Tuan Giao. A notable climb of 15 kilometers leads up a mountain pass partway through the day, though the overall terrain is less severe than previous days. Overnight in Tuan Giao guesthouse.
6Tuan Giao to Son La: Pha Din Pass and DescentTuan Giao to Son La · Son La · Pha Din Pass
A short transfer reaches Pha Din Pass (the "Heaven and Earth" pass) at 1,450 meters, where the cycling day begins with a 15-kilometer downhill section through green rice fields and karst valleys. The 70-kilometer total to Son La follows light-traffic roads, with wandering water buffaloes and Tai and Hmong children visible along the route. Overnight in Son La.
7Son La to Moc Chau: Downhill Through Karst CountrySon La to Moc Chau · Moc Chau
After a transfer, the day gradually descends the 45 kilometers to Moc Chau through rolling rather than steeply hilly terrain. Looming karst cliffs frame the passage, and in the afternoon the route crosses lush, terraced rice paddies beneath jagged cliff formations. Overnight in Moc Chau.
8Moc Chau to Mai Chau: Black Tai TerritoryMoc Chau to Mai Chau · Mai Chau
A testing but visually intense 45-kilometer day follows a narrow, quiet back road into regions primarily inhabited by Black Tai (Tai Dam) minority cultures. As the route approaches Mai Chau at 1,000 meters, it passes through plum orchards, corn plantations, and tea fields. Overnight in a homestay.
9Mai Chau to Cuc Phuong National Park Along the Ma RiverCuc Phuong National Park · Ma River · Primate Rescue Centre
An 80-kilometer route follows the banks of the Ma River on an easier riding day through a working landscape of people, crops, and water channels. The scenery remains rural and photo-rich throughout. In the late afternoon, a transfer carries the group to Cuc Phuong National Park, one of Vietnam's most important nature reserves and home to the country's largest continuous area of primary forest. Time allows for a visit to the Primate Rescue Centre, where staff work with endangered species including the Cat Ba Langur. Overnight in a park bungalow.
10Cuc Phuong Forest to HanoiCuc Phuong forest · Hanoi
The final leg of your journey begins with a 40-kilometer ride through Cuc Phuong forest, passing through the park to its center. A tea break offers a moment to reflect before your van driver completes the transfer to Hanoi, where you'll spend your final night. Services conclude.
