Laos by Mountain Bike: Kong Lor Cave, Karst & Mekong — 7 Days

A mountain bike loop through limestone valleys, underground rivers, and remote villages, starting and ending in Vientiane.

This seven-day cycling route traces the geography of central Laos from Vientiane southward through Phou Khao Khouay's forested hills, into the karst terrain around Kong Lor Cave, across Nakai Reservoir's flooded forest, and back north along the Mekong to the capital. The itinerary alternates between backcountry cycling (22–65 km per day) and water-based exploration—a 7.5 km boat passage through Kong Lor Cave and a kayak trip to a jungle lagoon. Accommodation moves from jungle resorts to lakeside guesthouses to colonial-era hotels in riverside towns. The route is not a race; it follows quiet backroads, pauses at local settlements and natural swimming holes, and is designed for riders with moderate fitness and basic bike-handling skills.

Highlights

  • Cycle through Buddha Park's sculpture garden near Vientiane before heading into Phou Khao Khouay's forest

  • Visit Tad Song Sa, a tiered waterfall, and visit Tham Nang Ene Cave with its colored rock formations in the Hinboun River valley
  • Cycle the final stretch along the Mekong River to Khoun Kong Leng Lake, a turquoise spring held sacred locally

Day by day

1Vientiane to Phou Khao Khouay: Buddha Park and Forest BackroadsVientiane to Phou Khao Khouay · Phou Khao Khouay · Buddha Park · jungle resort
Begin at Buddha Park in Vientiane, a compound of concrete and stone sculptures—Buddha statues, demons, and erotic figures. After exploring the site, transfer by minivan to the base of Phou Khao Khouay. The first cycling segment covers 55 km through rural backcountry, following quiet roads that climb gradually into low hills forested with teak and dipterocarp. Arrive at a jungle resort set within the national protected area by midday. The afternoon allows time to swim in the resort's pool or walk forest trails. The air at this elevation cools noticeably in the evening, and stars emerge with minimal light pollution.
2Vieng Kham to Ban Nahin: Rock Point and Karst FormationsBan Nahin · Rock Point · Vieng Kham village
Transfer by vehicle for three hours to Vieng Kham village, where the cycling portion begins. The 35 km route winds through remote settlements and emerges into a landscape dominated by jagged limestone formations—Rock Point—that rise abruptly from the valley floor like a natural fortress. Stop before sunset to visit the karst topography on foot, noting the caves and weathered rock faces. A local-style dinner is served at a vantage point overlooking the spiny peaks. Overnight in a cabin with views across the formation.
3Kong Lor Cave: Underground River and Jungle LagoonKong Lor Cave · jungle lagoon · Silver River Resort
The morning bike ride covers 40 km through a limestone valley to Kong Lor Cave, one of Laos' most significant karstic formations. The cave itself opens into a 7.5 km underground river; visitors travel by wooden boat through complete darkness, carrying headlamps to illuminate the passages and the occasional chamber filled with stalactite formations. The exit emerges into remote hinterland. The boat journey is retraced in reverse to return to the entrance. After emerging, transfer to Silver River Resort and enjoy a light lunch by the water. The afternoon includes a 1.5-hour kayaking trip to a jungle lagoon before returning to the overnight cabin.
4Lak Sao Descent: Mountain Trails, Cool Pool, and Dragon CaveLak Sao · Cool Pool · Dragon Cave · mountain pass · forest · cave entrance · local guesthouse
A short transfer reaches a mountain pass, from which the 65 km cycle descends through forest, following terrain that loses elevation gradually. The Cool Pool, an aquamarine natural basin fed by limestone springs, provides a rest stop and swimming opportunity. After lunch, visit Dragon Cave, a large stalactite-filled chamber accessible via a short walk. A brief climb from the cave entrance yields panoramic views of the surrounding hills. The final cycling section enters Lak Sao, a border town with Vietnam known for cross-border trade activity. Overnight is in a local guesthouse.
5Lak Sao to Nakai: Mountainside Buddha Carvings and Flooded Forestmountainside Buddha carvings · Nakai Reservoir · Nakai Lake
The longest cycling day of the tour, 65 km, begins from Lak Sao and winds over a series of hills toward Nakai Reservoir. En route, stop at mountainside Buddha carvings carved into cliff faces. As altitude decreases, the landscape transitions into a flooded forest created by the Nakai Dam; submerged tree trunks stand vertically in calm water, creating an otherworldly scene. After a lakeside lunch, continue to the overnight resort beside the vast, mirror-like surface of Nakai Lake. The guide can prepare fresh fish grilled lakeside for the evening meal, and the light here at sunset reflects off the water with little disturbance.
6Thakek Valley: Waterfalls, Caves, and Riverside TrailsThakek · Tad Song Sa · Tham Nang Ene Cave · Nam Hinboun River at Tha Falang
Depart from Nakai and begin a cycle interspersed with walking and water passages. Tad Song Sa, a tiered waterfall framed by dense jungle, is the first major stop; a short walk leads to the upper cascade where a smoothie can be purchased. Continue to Tham Nang Ene Cave, where colored lighting highlights the interior rock formations and stalactite details. The 49 km cycle is split into two segments—22 km to the waterfall area, then 27 km onward—with a lunch break served by the Nam Hinboun River at Tha Falang, a local picnic spot. The final cycling section follows quiet backroads into Thakek, a riverside town with French colonial architecture overlooking the Mekong River toward Thailand. Overnight in a colonial-era boutique hotel.
7Thakek to Vientiane: Mekong River and Khoun Kong Leng LakeThakek to Vientiane · Mekong River · Khoun Kong Leng Lake
The final 50 km cycle begins by following the Mekong River northward before veering inland to Khoun Kong Leng Lake, a turquoise spring held sacred by local communities, fed by underground limestone aquifers. The water is notably clear and cool. After a farewell lunch, board the minivan for the return to Vientiane, arriving in the capital after dark.
