Laos: Luang Prabang, Plains of Jars & Mekong Valley — 10 Days

From temple complexes and river caves to war history sites and rural farming villages, traveling overland from north to south.

This 10-day itinerary moves through Laos's three principal regions—Luang Prabang in the north, Xieng Khouang's Plain of Jars in the highlands, and Vientiane in the south—by road and river. You'll visit temple complexes and archaeological sites, meet Hmong and Tai Dam communities, cycle to waterfalls and lagoons, and spend time on farms and in villages where daily life remains largely unchanged by tourism. The route covers overland travel, with stops at sites related to warfare, colonial-era architecture, and religious sculpture. Accommodation is in mid-range hotels with English-speaking guides; meals are eaten at local restaurants and farmstays rather than hotel dining rooms.

2Luang Prabang: Temples, Caves & RiverTraditional Art and Ethnology Center · Wat Xieng Thong · Pak Ou Caves · Ban Xanghai village · National Museum · Wat Mai · UXO Visitor Centre · Wat Visoun · Mount Phousi
Begin at the Traditional Art and Ethnology Center to gain context on Laos's ethnic populations. Visit Wat Xieng Thong, the royal city's principal temple, recognizable by its low, sweeping roof and ornate interiors. In late morning, take a long-tail boat upstream on the Mekong River to Pak Ou Caves, a two-chamber limestone shrine set into the riverbank and filled with Buddha images left by pilgrims over centuries. Return to the city and stop at Ban Xanghai village, where local rice wine is still produced by hand. After lunch at a local restaurant, tour the National Museum (housed in the former Royal Palace), then Wat Mai and the UXO Visitor Centre, which documents the ongoing impact of unexploded ordnance from the American bombing campaign. Visit Wat Visoun, notable for its enormous stupa and collection of gilded Buddha statues. End the afternoon on Mount Phousi, a small hill in the city center, to watch the sunset over the Mekong valley.
3Kuang Si Waterfall & Living Land Organic FarmKuang Si Waterfall · Living Land Lao Organic Farm · Bear Rescue Centre · Kuang Si Falls Butterflies Park · buffalo dairy farm
Drive to Living Land Lao Organic Farm in Phoung Van village and spend time observing and participating in typical farming activities—planting, harvesting, or animal care, depending on the season. In the afternoon, visit Kuang Si Waterfall, a three-tiered cascade surrounded by forest where you can swim in emerald pools or walk forest trails. Tour the adjacent Bear Rescue Centre, which shelters sun bears confiscated from illegal trafficking. Before returning to Luang Prabang, visit the Kuang Si Falls Butterflies Park and stop at a buffalo dairy farm. Return to the city for the night.
4Mountain Journey to Phonsavan & the Plain of JarsPhonsavan · mountainous terrain toward Xieng Khouang province · small villages
After breakfast, drive over mountainous terrain toward Xieng Khouang province, an 8-hour journey with stops at small villages to observe rural life and ethnic minority communities. You'll pass through landscape scarred by the secret bombing campaign during the Indochina War, the historical context that defines much of the region. Arrive in Phonsavan, the provincial capital, by evening and check into your hotel.
5Plain of Jars Archaeological SitesPlain of Jars sites · nearby villages · Muang Khoun · Phonsavan
Spend the morning visiting the three primary Plain of Jars sites—Bronze Age burial grounds scattered across rolling grassland, marked by hundreds of massive stone vessels of unknown origin and purpose. Wander nearby villages to observe how local communities live within and around these archaeological zones. In the afternoon, drive to Muang Khoun, one of the few towns in the region that escaped major destruction during the American bombing campaign. Here you'll see a distinctive sitting giant Buddha carved from stone and several ruined pagodas. Return to Phonsavan for the night.
6Ethnic Villages & Scenic Drive to Vang ViengVang Vieng · villages near Phonsavan · Phonsavan to Vang Vieng
Visit villages near Phonsavan inhabited by Hmong hill tribes and Tai Dam people. Despite economic hardship, these communities maintain distinct cultural practices and histories visible in daily life and architecture. Depart for Vang Vieng, a small town on a bend of the Nam Song River, arriving by late afternoon. The drive itself is considered one of Laos's most scenic routes, descending from highlands through limestone karst formations.
7Vang Vieng: Market, Caves & Riverthe local market · Organic Farm Vang Vieng · Tham Jang Cave · Nam Song River · Ban Huai Ngae village · Blue Lagoon · Tham Phoukham Cave
Walk through the local market in the early morning to see how a typical Lao rural town sources food and goods. Visit Organic Farm Vang Vieng to observe small-scale agriculture. Visit Tham Jang Cave, a defensive fortification from the 19th century used against Chinese invaders, then cross the Nam Song River to Ban Huai Ngae village to observe different local lifestyles and livelihoods. In the afternoon, cycle approximately 7 kilometers to Blue Lagoon, a natural pool fed by underground springs where the water remains cool year-round. Visit Tham Phoukham Cave nearby. Return to town and take a leisurely long-tail boat ride at sunset along the Nam Song River to watch light fade over the water and surrounding limestone cliffs.
8Vang Vieng to Vientiane: Buddha Park & the MekongVientiane · Ban Houy Mo · Buddha Park (Wat Xieng Khuan)
Begin with a leisurely morning in Vang Vieng before departing after an early lunch. The route south takes you through the Mekong valley, with a stop at Ban Houy Mo, a traditional fishing village that offers a glimpse of riverside life along Laos's most important waterway. The day's centerpiece is Buddha Park (Wat Xieng Khuan), a remarkable sculpture garden built in 1958 by monk Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, who synthesized teachings from both Buddhism and Hinduism in his spiritual practice. This philosophical fusion shaped the park itself: over 200 statues populate the grounds, depicting Buddha images alongside Hindu deities, demons, and animals sacred to both traditions. Among the most striking figures is Indra, king of the Hindu gods, mounted on a three-headed elephant (Erawan), rendered in enormous scale. Equally impressive are a four-armed deity seated on horseback and a 12-faced deity with many hands—each sculpture detailed and commanding despite their size. The park's most well-known feature is a three-story gourd structure offering panoramic views of the entire grounds. Entry is through a stone gateway carved as a demon's mouth, roughly three meters high, with a stone ladder ascending to the elevated platform. Photography here rewards those willing to climb. In late afternoon, transfer to your hotel in Vientiane for the night.
9Vientiane: Temples, War History & Sacred SitesWat Sisaket · Wat Phra Keo · Wat Si Muang · COPE Visitor Centre · Patuxay · Pha That Luang
Begin at Wat Sisaket, considered one of the capital's most tranquil temples, with an interior lined by thousands of small Buddha niches. Continue to nearby Wat Phra Keo, now a museum displaying both Lao and Khmer religious art and sculpture. Visit Wat Si Muang. Tour the COPE Visitor Centre, an organization working with landmine and unexploded ordnance survivors—a necessary counterpoint to understanding modern Laos. After lunch, visit Patuxay, Laos's interpretation of the Arc de Triomphe. End at Pha That Luang, the nation's most sacred religious site: a golden stupa set within a compound, the location where Lao Buddhists make annual pilgrimages.
