Laos to Vietnam by Bike and River — 16 Days

From Luang Prabang through mountain passes to Halong Bay: cycling, river travel, and two countries in one arc

This 16-day itinerary moves north through Laos by bicycle and river, then south into Vietnam's upland plateaus and limestone karst, ending with two days on Halong Bay. The route begins in Luang Prabang, descends 60 kilometers to Kuang Si Falls, then turns remote—dirt roads through jungle communities, the Nam Ou River by traditional long boat, and a crossing into Vietnam at Dien Bien Phu. From there, the ride descends through ethnic minority villages across the northwestern plateau, dropping altitude and landscape with each day: high mountain passes near Dien Bien, Black Tai settlements around Mai Chau, then the primary forest and primate reserve at Cuc Phuong. The final leg moves by van to Hanoi and onto a two-night cruise through Halong Bay's limestone peaks. Throughout, guides are English-speaking, bikes are mountain-spec, and accommodations range from guesthouses to homestays to floating cabins. The riding is intermediate to challenging; pacing is leisurely between active days.
