Laos Village Cycling & Trek — 5 Days from Luang Prabang

Dirt roads, jungle trails, and three homestays with local families across the Chomphet and Long Lao Mai regions north of Luang Prabang.

This tour moves away from Luang Prabang's main tourist corridor and into the villages and farmland north of the UNESCO zone. Over five days, you cycle dirt roads, trek through jungle, and sleep in the homes of Khmu, Hmong, and Lao families—each homestay a working household where farming rhythms shape the daily schedule. The pace is deliberate: short distances allow time to observe how rice paddies are tended, how village stores function as gathering places, and how three distinct ethnic communities live side by side in Long Lao Mai. Income from the tour goes directly to host families and a village development fund supporting school and water infrastructure. This is not a guided performance of village life, but a structured visit to communities that have invited visitors in to help diversify their income beyond subsistence farming.

Highlights

  • Cycling across Chomphet district to Pak Lueang village and its waterfall near Green Jungle Park

Day by day

1Cycling Chomphet District to Kiao Niao FarmstayChomphet district · Kiao Niao Farmstay · Pak Lueang village · across the water · villages along the riverbank
The route begins across the river from central Luang Prabang, in Chomphet district. You cycle to Pak Lueang village, a short distance from Green Jungle Park, where a waterfall and flower garden sit at the trail's edge. From there, the route continues along the riverbank through villages that see few visitors on bikes. A local ferry carries you and your bicycle across the water. On the far bank, you cycle to Kiao Niao Farmstay, a small property set within rice paddies. Your first evening is spent with the hosts, learning how the farming cycle determines the rhythm of daily life in the surrounding landscape.
2Kuang Si Falls and Trek to Long Lao Mai (8.5 km)Kuang Si Falls · Long Lao Mai
An early departure from the farmstay allows you to reach Kuang Si Falls before crowds gather. A bracing swim in the morning pool is followed by a trek that climbs to the top of the waterfall. The route then follows a trail past an azure pool into dense jungle. Over 8.5 kilometers, the path descends through forest into Long Lao Mai, a Khmu village where Hmong families also live. The two communities settled here separately—Khmu originally, then Hmong resettled by the government after the civil war ended. A tiger visit in 1981, according to villagers, unified the two groups. That evening, after dinner with your homestay family, you can sit with others by firelight and look at the unobstructed sky above the valley.
3Jungle Trek to Nong Khouay (9 km)Nong Khouay · the valley to Nong Khouay · a small central store
Village routines start early; breakfast arrives at 7 a.m. A three-hour trek through the valley to Nong Khouay follows, covering 9 kilometers through primary and secondary jungle. Nong Khouay sits off the electrical grid. A small central store serves as the informal meeting place where villagers gather and visitors are welcomed over coffee or beer. The evening invites conversation and reflection on what you've observed. An elder known locally as 'Grandpa' often shares stories from his life and welcomes questions from visitors about their homes and travels.
4Dirt Road Descent and Cycling to Houay Fai (30 km)Houay Fai · Nong Khouay
The route returns to bicycles. A steep descent from Nong Khouay on loose dirt—the brake-heavy section of the ride—leads into farmland and secondary forest. Thirty kilometers of dirt roads connect you to Houay Fai, where another family hosts you for the night. That evening, the village offers a Baci ceremony, a traditional blessing performed by residents to bid farewell to guests. String bracelets are tied to your wrist as an expression of goodwill.
5Kayak Return to Luang Prabang via Nam Khan RiverNam Khan River · Houay Fai
A short walk from Houay Fai leads to the Nam Khan River. A two-hour paddle downstream returns you to Luang Prabang, completing the journey.
