Lhasa & Namtso Lake — 5 Days

Potala Palace, monastery philosophy debates, and a high-altitude sacred lake at 4,718 meters

This five-day route covers Lhasa's core religious and political landmarks — the Potala Palace (winter seat of the Dalai Lamas), Jokhang Temple (Tibet's most sacred site), and two major monastic universities where philosophical debate still occurs in afternoon sessions. A day trip to Namtso Lake, the world's highest saltwater lake at 4,718 meters, rounds out the itinerary with time among nomadic herds and snow-capped peaks. The pace builds gradually; Day 1 is devoted entirely to altitude acclimatization at 3,670 meters, and Day 2–3 stay within the city before the longer journey north on Day 4.

Highlights

  • Potala Palace: the 130-meter structure divided into the White Palace (administrative) and Red Palace (chapels, shrines, and tombs of successive Dalai Lamas)
  • Philosophical debate sessions at Sera Monastery, held in afternoon courtyards (except Sundays)
  • Jokhang Temple, Tibet's most sacred site and a UNESCO World Heritage location, with a golden Buddha at its center
  • Barkhor Street kora circuit: walk the pilgrimage path with local devotees
  • Drepung Monastery, founded in 1416, once housing up to 10,000 monks
  • Tangka Academy: study the traditional sacred Buddhist art form of thangka painting
  • Namtso Lake at 4,718 meters: the world's highest saltwater lake, surrounded by snow peaks, with yaks and nomadic herds across grasslands

Day by day

1Arrival in Lhasa and Altitude AcclimatizationLhasa airport · Lhasa River through the highland valley · hotel at 3,670 meters elevation
You will be met at Lhasa airport (100 kilometers away) or the city train station with a traditional white katak prayer scarf. The route from the airport follows the Lhasa River through the highland valley; the station arrival is shorter. En route, there are opportunities to photograph local villages and landscape. Upon reaching the hotel at 3,670 meters elevation, there are no planned activities. Rest and hydration are the priorities as your body adjusts to the altitude.
2Drepung and Sera Monasteries: Philosophy and OracleDrepung · Sera · Nechung temple
Both Drepung and Sera monasteries sit on the lower slopes of hills north of Lhasa and function as university-style centers of Tibetan Buddhist learning. Drepung, founded in 1416 by a disciple of Tsongkhapa, once held up to 10,000 monks; its main assembly hall remains substantial, and you may hear monks chanting during your visit. Nearby Nechung temple served as the seat of the Dalai Lamas' oracle advisor. In the afternoon, Sera hosts philosophical debate sessions in its courtyards — a daily occurrence except Sundays — where monks engage in rigorous argumentation over Buddhist texts and doctrine.
3Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor PilgrimagePotala Palace · Jokhang Temple · Barkhor Street · Tangka Academy
The Potala Palace, perched 130 meters above the city, served as the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas and the seat of Tibet's government. It divides into two sections: the White Palace, for secular administration, and the Red Palace, containing chapels, shrines, and the tombs of Dalai Lamas. Ticket times determine visit order, sometimes before or after Jokhang Temple, Tibet's most sacred site and a UNESCO World Heritage location. According to tradition, Jokhang was constructed over a lake after previous attempts to build monasteries nearby failed. The temple's centerpiece is a golden Buddha; crowds of pilgrims arrive steadily throughout the day. Afterward, join the kora circuit around Barkhor Street, walking the clockwise pilgrimage path alongside local devotees. The day concludes at the Tangka Academy, where traditional thangka painting — a meticulous form of sacred Buddhist art involving layered pigments and gold leaf on canvas — is demonstrated and explained.
4Day Trip to Namtso LakeNamtso Lake · high grassland
A full day is devoted to the journey north to Namtso Lake, the world's highest saltwater lake at 4,718 meters and China's second-largest lake. The route passes through high grassland with views of snow-capped peaks. The lake's waters are a clear blue, surrounded by white mountains. Yaks and sheep graze across the surrounding grasslands, tended by nomadic herds. Namtso holds deep significance as a pilgrimage destination and remains a major draw for photographers. The long drive is justified by the scale and isolation of the landscape.
