Lhasa: Potala Palace, Sacred Temples & Yamdrok Lake — 4 Days

Four days exploring Tibet's capital, including Jokhang Temple, the Potala Palace, and a day excursion to Yamdrok Lake and Khamba-la Pass.

This four-day extension fits naturally into a China itinerary, anchored in Lhasa at the heart of the Tibetan plateau. The first two days center on the city's principal religious and political monuments: the Potala Palace, a 130-meter structure that served as the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas, and the Jokhang Temple, the most sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism and a constant destination for pilgrims. Between these visits, you walk the Barkhor Street circuit and stop at a tangka workshop to observe the intricate hand-painting of sacred Buddhist art. On the third day, a drive south crosses the Yarlung Tsangpo—Tibet's longest river—and climbs to Khamba-la Pass, where Yamdrok Lake, a 72-kilometer turquoise freshwater body, appears against snow-capped peaks. The itinerary is designed to give first-time visitors a grounded sense of Lhasa's geography, religious life, and surrounding terrain, while allowing genuine acclimatization to the altitude.

Highlights

  • The Potala Palace: a complex divided into the White Palace (secular) and the Red Palace (chapels, shrines, and tombs of Dalai Lamas)
  • Jokhang Temple: the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism, a World Heritage site housing a central golden Buddha and receiving constant waves of pilgrims performing circumambulations
  • Barkhor Street circuit and tangka workshop: observation of sacred Buddhist thangka painting, an ancient form of religious art still practiced by hand
  • Yamdrok Lake: a 72-kilometer turquoise freshwater lake viewed from Khamba-la Pass (4,730m), framed by snow-capped mountains across the Yarlung Tsangpo valley
  • Lhasa River valley approach: highland views along the river corridor from either the airport (100km distant) or train station on arrival

Day by day

1Arrival in Lhasa & Altitude AcclimatizationLhasa airport · Lhasa River valley · hotel
You arrive at either Lhasa airport (100 kilometers from the city, situated in an adjacent valley) or the railway station on the city's outskirts. Your guide meets you with a white katak—a traditional prayer scarf presented as a welcome. The drive into Lhasa follows the Lhasa River valley northward through highland terrain; stops along the way allow views of local settlements and the surrounding plateau landscape. The afternoon is unscheduled. The priority is rest, hydration, and gradual acclimatization to the altitude. The hotel is your base for the next three nights.
2Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple & Barkhor StreetPotala Palace · Jokhang Temple · Barkhor Street · tangka workshop
This day covers Lhasa's two most significant religious and political sites. The Potala Palace dominates the city's western skyline, rising 130 meters above the surrounding streets. Built as the winter residence of the Tibetan government and successive Dalai Lamas, the structure divides into two architectural zones: the White Palace, housing secular administrative chambers, and the Red Palace, where chapels, shrines, and the tombs of Dalai Lamas occupy the upper levels. The steep interior stairs and high altitude may affect visitors unaccustomed to elevation; pace yourself accordingly. You move through the complex with your guide—a requirement imposed by local authorities. Ticket times for the Potala are assigned when your visit is booked; depending on your assigned slot, you may visit the Jokhang Temple first or second. The Jokhang, the most sacred temple in Tibetan Buddhism and a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits in the center of Lhasa and draws pilgrims year-round. A golden Buddha stands in the central chamber. Time here allows you to move through the halls, observe the devotional practice around you, and absorb the site's spiritual significance. After these two main visits, you walk the Barkhor Street, the circuit around the Jokhang, where pilgrims circumambulate and vendors line the path. A stop at a tangka workshop shows the hand-painting technique used to create sacred Buddhist art—an ancient and meticulous craft requiring years of training. Breakfast is included; lunch and dinner are on your own.
3Yamdrok Lake & Khamba-la Pass Day ExcursionYamdrok Lake · Khamba-la Pass · Yarlung Tsangpo
A full day outside Lhasa takes you south across the Yarlung Tsangpo, Tibet's longest river, and up onto the high plateau. The drive from Lhasa to Khamba-la Pass requires approximately four to five hours, including time for acclimatization stops. The road climbs to Khamba-la Pass at 4,730 meters, where the landscape opens to reveal Yamdrok Lake—a freshwater body with distinctive turquoise coloring, stretching 72 kilometers across a basin ringed by snow-capped peaks. The elevation gain and reduced oxygen may affect some visitors; allow adequate time for rest at the pass. The return to Lhasa occurs in the late afternoon (approximately six to seven hours of driving total). Breakfast is included.
