Luang Prabang: Cycling and Trek to Ban Phou Luang Tai — 1 Day

Cross the Nam Khan River to a remote Hmong settlement above Chomphet District; 6km uphill trek, 20km circuit ride on dirt roads.

This one-day cycle and trek moves across the river from Luang Prabang's UNESCO zone into Chomphet District, where few foreign visitors venture. A boat ride downriver precedes a 12km cycle to Ban Som, followed by a 6km, three-hour uphill trek to Ban Phou Luang Tai—a Hmong community of 35 families and 281 people living without electricity, running water, or road access. The settlement sits on a mountainside in what residents describe as a timeless existence; the Lao government has committed to relocating the community by 2024 to provide access to clean water, electricity, health care, and sanitation. After lunch shared in the village, the trek descends over roughly 90 minutes. The return journey follows a looping 20km circuit on dirt roads with medium terrain, stream crossings, and some elevation gain. An English-speaking guide accompanies the entire route.

Day by day

1Cycling and Trek to Ban Phou Luang TaiBan Phou Luang Tai · central Luang Prabang · Pak Long · lower elevations · Ban Phou Luang Tai to lower elevations
Depart from central Luang Prabang by boat, traveling downstream to the village of Pak Long. From there, cycle 12km on dirt roads through Chomphet District farmland to Ban Som, where the uphill trek begins. The ascent to Ban Phou Luang Tai covers 6km over approximately three hours, climbing to a remote Hmong community perched on the mountainside. The settlement comprises 35 families and 281 people living without electricity, running water, or school services beyond a small primary school. The community exists in relative isolation, dependent on subsistence farming and traditional practices. The Lao government has committed to relocation and infrastructure development—electricity, clean water, and sanitation—with moves scheduled to begin in 2024. Following a midday meal in the village, descend the mountain over roughly 90 minutes. The return to the lower elevations follows a looping circuit of approximately 20km on dirt roads, including some hills and stream crossings. Throughout the day, an English-speaking guide navigates the route and facilitates conversations with community members. The cycling portion is moderate terrain with the dirt surfaces and gradients typical of rural Laotian backcountry roads.
