Manyueyuan National Forest: Waterfalls & Wildlife — Day Trip from Taipei

Half-day forest hike near Taipei with two major waterfalls, river ecology, and native macaques; includes guide and round-trip transport.

Manyueyuan National Forest sits ninety minutes south of Taipei, a protected conifer and mixed-hardwood reserve built around the Dabao River and anchored by two named waterfalls: Manyueyuan and Virgin. The park operates as a linear trail system, rising gently from a lower parking area through interpretive zones and a relatively recent visitor center before branching into steeper tracks toward the falls. Most routes suit beginner and family hikers; the river itself holds fish visible from the main trail, and the canopy regularly shows Formosan Rock Macaques, Red-bellied Squirrels, and perched Crested Serpent Eagles hunting overhead. The park is also known for butterfly activity, particularly in warmer months. Trails range from flat, stroller-compatible sections near the entrance to moderate elevation climbs toward each waterfall, both of which have viewing platforms. A guide familiar with the reserve's ecology, trails, and timing helps visitors move efficiently through the system and return to Taipei by evening—useful for those adding a forest day to a city-focused itinerary.

Day by day

1Manyueyuan National Forest: Waterfalls and River EcologyTaipei Main Station · upper parking lot · visitor center · main riverside path · Manyueyuan Waterfall · Virgin Waterfall · self-guided trail · restaurant within the park
A morning pickup from Taipei Main Station (or an arranged alternate location) transports you south through the surrounding lowlands toward Manyueyuan National Forest. The drive takes roughly ninety minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Upon arrival at the upper parking lot, you'll find a small cafe and vendors selling fresh fruit, ice cream, and hiking supplies along the paved approach road. The ticket booth and visitor center lie a short walk downhill—a relatively new, bilingual facility with interactive exhibits on local plant and animal ecology, as well as information on the Taiwan Forest Bureau's conservation efforts throughout the reserve. Washroom facilities are available on-site. Your guide orients you to the trail network. The main riverside path (approximately 2.5 kilometers) runs mostly level and hard-surfaced, connecting the parking areas, ticketing center, visitor center, and restaurant along a gradually inclining route. This beginner-friendly stretch is stroller-compatible with larger wheels and features frequent rest spots and interpretive signage detailing local flora, fauna, and park management practices. Meander along the Dabao River with views across to surrounding mountain slopes. Fish are often visible in the shallows, and the canopy above regularly hosts Crested Serpent Eagles perched in the trees, hunting for prey. Two primary destinations branch from this main trail: Manyueyuan Waterfall and Virgin Waterfall, each approximately one kilometer away via steeper routes with steps and greater elevation climbs. Both trails are more challenging and better tackled without a stroller; your guide advises on timing, fitness level, and whether either route suits your group's pace and interests. Each waterfall opens onto a viewing platform, making them natural stopping points for rest. A small restaurant operates within the park about 500 meters along the trail from the visitor center, offering both indoor and outdoor seating with packaged and homemade snacks and drinks. Washroom facilities are available here as well. The reserve is also home to Formosan Rock Macaques and Red-bellied Squirrels, particularly visible in morning and late-afternoon light. For those seeking a quieter, less-traveled route, a self-guided trail (under 2 kilometers) begins just before the visitor center and winds through the lush forest interior to connect with the waterfall areas. This route offers a more secluded experience deeper into the park. Throughout your time here, you'll have approximately six hours of free time to visit the National Forest at your own pace—whether that means following the main riverside path, tackling one or both waterfall trails, visiting the interactive exhibits at the visitor center, or simply resting at one of the many scenic viewpoints. Your guide remains available to answer questions about the ecosystem and local wildlife. In the afternoon, your guide manages the day's pacing to ensure a return to the parking area for your departure back to Taipei, with an estimated arrival at Taipei Main Station around 17:00. The itinerary allows flexibility: if you wish to adjust departure times or visit other destinations within the ten-hour tour window, your guide can coordinate this in advance. Traffic conditions may affect exact timings.
