Mekong River by Private Slow Boat: Houay Xay to Luang Prabang — 2 Days

A two-day private boat journey downstream from the Lao-Thai border to Luang Prabang, with stops at hill tribe settlements, limestone cave temples, and traditional craft villages.

This two-day private charter traverses the Mekong River from Houay Xay to Luang Prabang at the pace of a traditional slow boat. The route follows the river's course through northern Laos, connecting border crossings, remote villages, and significant religious sites. Day one moves downstream to Pakbeng; day two continues south with visits to Pak Ou Caves—a sanctuary holding over 4,000 Buddha figures set within limestone cliffs at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers—and Ban Xang Hai, a settlement known for locally produced rice whisky and handicrafts. The journey concludes in Luang Prabang, Laos's former royal capital.

Day by day

1Houay Xay to Pakbeng: Mekong Descent and Hill Tribe SettlementPakbeng · Mekong · Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge 4 in Houay Xay · private slow boat · Pak Tha · hill tribe village situated along the river's bank
From the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge 4 in Houay Xay, transfer by tuk tuk to the boat landing. Board your private slow boat for the downstream journey on the Mekong. The first stop is Pak Tha, where boat documents are processed. Continuing downstream, the boat visits a hill tribe village situated along the river's bank, offering contact with local settlement life. Lunch is served on board. In the afternoon, rest and sample local seasonal snacks and drinks as the boat continues its unhurried passage. Arrival in Pakbeng occurs before sunset.
2Pakbeng to Luang Prabang: Pak Ou Caves and Whisky VillagePakbeng · Luang Prabang · Pak Ou Caves · Ban Xang Hai · Ban Xang Khong
The boat departs Pakbeng around 08:00. Use the morning to ask your guide questions about Luang Prabang and Laos. Lunch is served on board as you travel downriver. The afternoon brings two key stops. First is Pak Ou Caves, one of Laos's most respected holy sites. Set within dramatic limestone cliffs at the confluence of the Nam Ou River and the Mekong, the caves consist of two chambers: Tham Ting (lower) and Tham Theung (upper). Together they house over 4,000 Buddha figures—mostly wooden offerings that have accumulated across thousands of years. These icons serve as tributes to both Lord Buddha and the river spirit, making the caves a shrine of profound religious significance. The second stop is Ban Xang Hai, a village 29 kilometers north of Luang Prabang, famous for Lao Lao—homemade rice whisky produced locally. You'll have the opportunity to taste and purchase if interested, and browse handicrafts made by artisans in this small, authentic settlement. Before arriving in Luang Prabang, the boat makes a final stop at Ban Xang Khong, a community specialized in manufacturing silk and Sa Paper products. Arrival in Luang Prabang is scheduled for around 17:00, followed by transfer to your hotel.
