Moon Peak Expedition: Dhauladhar Trek to 15,200 Feet — 5 Days

High-altitude mountaineering in the Dhauladhar Range, McLeodGanj to Moon Peak via Triund Valley and Indrahar Pass

McLeodGanj, situated above Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, serves as base for this five-day trek to Moon Peak at 15,200 feet in the Dhauladhar Range. The town is home to the Tibetan exile community and their principal temple, and functions as both a cultural and trekking hub. The Moon Peak Expedition follows a steep, marked trail from Guna Devi Temple through Triund Valley—a high grassland with views across the Dhauladhar ranges—then ascends to Lahesh Caves and across the Indrahar Pass to the summit. The trek involves sustained elevation gain through rocky, boulder-strewn terrain; weather and acclimatization dictate the exact timing of the summit push. Support includes experienced guides, porters, camping equipment, meals, and high-altitude safety gear including oxygen and a stretcher.

Highlights

  • Ascent to Moon Peak summit at 15,200 feet with views across the western Himalayas
  • Crossing of Indrahar Pass on the descent from Moon Peak
  • Triund Valley grassland traverse with panoramic Dhauladhar Range vistas
  • Lahesh Caves, a natural shelter at mid-altitude used as a staging point
  • Rocky, boulder-technical terrain requiring careful footing and sustained elevation gain

Day by day

1McLeodGanj to Triund ValleyTriund Valley · Guna Devi Temple · Magic Cafe
The trek begins at Guna Devi Temple in McLeodGanj and follows a marked, steep trail upward for approximately 9 kilometers and 5 hours. The path ascends through scattered forest and cafe stops—including the Magic Cafe—before opening into Triund Valley, a high alpine grassland. The valley offers direct sightlines to the Dhauladhar Range and the settled lands below. Participants camp at Triund overnight and have the remainder of the day to acclimatize and rest.
2Triund Valley to Ilaqa GotTriund Valley to Ilaqa Got · Ilaqa Got · Snowline Cafe
An early start allows trekkers to depart with the sunrise. The route heads upward for 5 kilometers and 3 hours, passing Snowline Cafe roughly midway, before arriving at Ilaqa Got. From this elevated camp, views extend across the range. An acclimatization walk to the base of nearby terrain is recommended to aid adjustment to the altitude before the next day's push.
3Ilaqa Got to Lahesh CavesIlaqa Got to Lahesh Caves · Lahesh Caves
A short morning walk of 2 hours leads to Lahesh Caves, a natural formation that serves as the base camp for the summit attempt. The timing of the Moon Peak climb depends on weather conditions; the ascent may take place on Day 3 if conditions permit, or be deferred to Day 4. The guide and support team assess cloud cover, wind, and visibility before committing to the summit push. This day allows additional acclimatization if weather requires a delay.
4Summit Attempt: Moon Peak via Indrahar PassMoon Peak · Indrahar Pass · Lahesh Caves
An early departure from Lahesh Caves precedes the ascent of Indrahar Pass, followed by a steep climb to Moon Peak at 15,200 feet. The final approach to the summit involves technical terrain and may require fixed rope. From the peak, visibility extends across the Dhauladhar Range and into the surrounding districts of Chamba and Kangra. After time spent at the summit, the descent retraces the route back to Lahesh Caves, arriving by afternoon.
5Lahesh Caves to McLeodGanjLahesh Caves · Lahesh Caves to McLeodGanj
An early-morning descent from Lahesh Caves retraces the ascent route back to McLeodGanj, typically arriving by evening and marking the end of the expedition.
