Mount Kailash and the Guge Kingdom — 14 Days

Sacred pilgrimage and archaeological ruins across the Tibetan plateau, with three days trekking Mount Kailash's kora

This 14-day journey reaches two of western Tibet's most significant religious and historical sites: Mount Kailash and the Guge Kingdom. The route begins with an overland crossing from Kathmandu through the Nepal-Tibet border, climbing via high passes to Lake Manasarovar and the base of Mount Kailash at 4,575 metres. The central portion involves three days of trekking the kora (circumambulation) around Kailash itself, a circuit that ascends to the Dolma La pass at 5,613 metres before descending to Zuthulpuk. After completing the kora, the itinerary shifts south to the Guge Kingdom's ruins near Zanda, where medieval monasteries and palace structures occupy the Tsaparang and Tholing valleys. The return route retraces the same passes back to Nepal. Throughout, accommodation consists of guesthouses and basic lodges; physical preparation for high altitude and sustained trekking is essential.

A day set aside for altitude adjustment at 3,700 metres. A short hike in the surrounding hills ascends to approximately 4,000 metres, allowing the body to begin adapting to thin air. An alternative option is to walk through Nyalam itself, exploring the local town and its immediate environs. Overnight remains at the guesthouse.
3Nyalam to New Dongba — High Plateau ApproachNyalam to New Dongba · New Dongba
A 390-kilometre drive southeastward toward New Dongba at 4,600 metres, taking five to six hours. The route traverses villages and herder encampments across broad plains, with snow-capped peaks visible to the south. The landscape gradually opens as elevation increases. An alternative destination, Saga, offers better accommodation options if preferred. Overnight at a guesthouse in New Dongba.
4New Dongba to Lake Manasarovar and Mount KailashNew Dongba to Lake Manasarovar · Lake Manasarovar · Mount Kailash · Hore
A 277-kilometre drive toward Lake Manasarovar at 4,558 metres, requiring four to five hours. Late afternoon brings the first views of Mount Kailash and the sacred lake. The route descends slightly to the village of Hore, situated on the shore. Lake Manasarovar—at 4,558 metres the world's highest freshwater lake—holds turquoise water and supports populations of fish and waterfowl. Mount Gurula-Mandala and Lake Rakshash lie in the surrounding region. The area is known for mineral deposits, geothermal springs, and wildlife.
