Mount Kailash & Manasarovar: Pilgrimage Trek and Tibetan Plateau — 14 Days
Trek the three-day Kora around Mount Kailash (7,762m) during Saga Dawa festival, with a week crossing the Tibetan plateau from Lhasa through Shigatse to Darchen, and return via Everest Base Camp and Rongbuk Monastery.
Mount Kailash holds significance across Hindu and Buddhist cosmology as the mythical Mount Meru, the axis of the universe. Its location near the sources of four major rivers—the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali—compounds its spiritual weight. This 14-day journey departs Lhasa, traverses the high Tibetan plateau at elevations between 4,600 and 5,600 meters, and reaches Mount Kailash during Saga Dawa festival, when thousands of pilgrims gather to replace the Tarboche flagpole and circumambulate the mountain. The three-day trek around Kailash's base (the Kora) crosses two high passes—Dikpala and Dormala—before returning to Darchen. The return leg includes Lake Manasarovar, Rongbuk Monastery, and Everest Base Camp in the Rongbuk Valley, before driving back to Lhasa and onward to Kathmandu.

Guides and drivers meet you at the airport with a white katak scarf, a traditional Tibetan prayer scarf offered in welcome. The drive to Lhasa covers 100 kilometers, following the Lhasa River valley with views across highland villages. You arrive at 3,670 meters elevation—higher than any major city in North America. 2Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple & Sacred Kora in LhasaPotala Palace · Jokhang Temple · Barkhor Street
Begin with Potala Palace, the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas, perched 130 meters above the city. The structure divides into two sections: the White Palace, housing secular offices, and the Red Palace, containing chapels, shrines, and the tombs of Dalai Lamas. Your guide leads the exploration—a requirement for all visitors. Afterward, visit Jokhang Temple, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site and recognized as Tibet's most sacred temple. A golden Buddha stands at its center, and pilgrims move through the temple in steady streams throughout the day. According to Tibetan tradition, the temple was built on a lake site after failed attempts to establish monasteries elsewhere. In the afternoon, join pilgrims on the Barkhor Street kora (or the Potala Palace circuit), walking clockwise—the direction prescribed by Tibetan Buddhist practice. Return to your hotel in Lhasa.
