Mount Kilimanjaro: Machame Route — 8 Days

Africa's highest peak via the Southern Circuit, 5,895 meters, rainforest to alpine desert

Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 meters, stands as Africa's highest mountain and the world's tallest freestanding peak. Located in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenya border, it can be approached via several routes; the Machame route—known locally as the Whisky route for its challenging terrain and steep pitches—offers a more gradual acclimatization schedule than faster alternatives, making it a practical choice for trekkers with high-altitude experience. The route ascends through five distinct ecological zones: rainforest, moorland, semi-desert, alpine desert, and arctic, each with its own weather patterns, vegetation, and wildlife. The path climbs from Machame Gate through the Shira plateau, crosses toward Lava Tower, descends to Barranco Camp for acclimatization, then rises steeply to Barafu before the final overnight push to Stella Point and the summit. The descent follows the Mweka route through lower-altitude terrain. Trekkers encounter wildlife including colobus monkeys and numerous bird species in the lower forest zones, while higher elevations reveal alpine vegetation, glaciers, and expansive views across the Tanzanian landscape. Success requires previous trekking experience, proper equipment, and attention to acclimatization protocols.

Best time to go: January to March & June to October

Day by day

1Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and Transfer to ArushaKilimanjaro International Airport · Arusha town · Meru View Lodge in Usa River · Kilimanjaro International Airport to Meru View Lodge in Usa River
Kilimanjaro International Airport, located between Moshi and Arusha, sits 35 kilometers from Arusha town and is the primary gateway to the mountain. Upon arrival, travelers are met by a transfer driver for the 45-minute drive to Meru View Lodge in Usa River, a 3-star accommodation near Arusha. The lodge sits in terrain offering views toward snow-capped peaks. Check-in includes equipment rental coordination and documentation review for the trek. The afternoon and evening remain unscheduled, allowing time to rest after travel or visit Arusha town by local taxi.
2Arusha to Machame Gate and Forest Trek to Machame CampArusha to Machame Gate · Machame Camp · Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The morning begins with a 1-1.5 hour drive from Arusha to Machame Gate at Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, passing through the village of Machame. The trek itself begins at 1,790 meters and climbs 11 kilometers through dense rainforest to Machame Camp at 3,010 meters, a 5-7 hour ascent. The forest trail is steep, often muddy, and slippery even in dry conditions; trekking poles provide essential stability. Colobus monkeys and bird species inhabit this zone. The day concludes at Machame Camp with overnight accommodation in mountain tents.
3Machame Camp to New Shira Camp Through MoorlandMachame Camp to New Shira Camp · New Shira Camp
The trek leaves the rainforest and enters moorland terrain, climbing 5 kilometers from Machame Camp at 3,010 meters to New Shira Camp at 3,845 meters over 4-6 hours. The ascent crosses steep, exposed pathways with perpendicular climbs that provide significant physical challenge. At higher altitude, vegetation shifts to low scrub and grasses. Overnight at New Shira Camp allows the body to begin acclimatization to thinning air.
4Shira Plateau to Lava Tower and Barranco CampShira plateau · Lava Tower · Barranco Camp
From New Shira Camp, the route traverses the Shira plateau eastward toward Kibo peak, then turns southeast toward Lava Tower (also called Shark's Tooth), a 10-kilometer stage over 6-8 hours. Elevation climbs from 3,845 meters to 4,640 meters in the semi-desert zone. After reaching Lava Tower, the route descends to Barranco Camp. This descent to the same general altitude bracket—a technique called "climb high, sleep low"—aids acclimatization. Overnight at Barranco Camp, trekkers dine under open sky and prepare for the technical Barranco Wall climb on the following day.
5Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga JunctionBarranco Camp · Barafu Camp · Karanga Junction
After breakfast and sunrise, the trek climbs from Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters, passing through Karanga Junction, a mid-route supply point, then ascending 5-6 hours to Barafu Camp at 4,640 meters. The terrain transitions into alpine desert with sparse vegetation and rocky ground. At Barafu, the South Circuit is complete; the camp sits on the southern face of Kibo and offers views of Mawenzi crater and distant Tanzanian landscapes. Trekkers rest here, consume substantial meals to build energy reserves, and prepare mentally for the final summit push.
6Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak Summit and Descent to Mweka HutBarafu Camp · Uhuru Peak · Mweka Hut · Stella Point · Mweka route
The summit push departs Barafu Camp in moonlit hours, typically between midnight and 2 a.m., climbing 5 kilometers over 7-8 hours through arctic terrain to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The ascent follows the route between Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers and reaches Stella Point, where early risers witness sunrise before the final 1-hour climb to the summit. Views from Stella Point and the summit may include the Kibo glacier, Mawenzi crater, and at clear dawn, the Tanzanian plateau far below. After time at the summit, descent via the Mweka route begins immediately, descending 12 kilometers over 4-6 hours to Mweka Hut at 3,080 meters. The lower elevation brings cooler, often misty conditions and possible light rain. Trekking poles and gaiters protect knees and feet on the steep, sometimes muddy descent. The final meal on the mountain occurs at Mweka Hut.
7Mweka Hut to Mweka Gate and Return to ArushaMweka Hut to Mweka Gate · Mweka Gate · lodge in Arusha · Mweka Village to Arusha
The descent concludes with a 10-kilometer trek from Mweka Hut at 3,080 meters to Mweka Gate at 1,630 meters, passing through rainforest over 3-4 hours. The lower-altitude trail is steep, wet, and slippery; trekking poles remain essential. At Mweka Gate, trekkers receive summit certificates verifying their attempt or successful ascent. A vehicle collects the group in Mweka Village for the drive back to Arusha and the hotel. The afternoon allows pool time and rest. Overnight at the lodge in Arusha.
8Departure from Kilimanjarohotel · hotel to Kilimanjaro International Airport
The final morning includes breakfast at the hotel and time to purchase souvenirs. A transfer vehicle delivers trekkers to Kilimanjaro International Airport for onward travel.
