Mount Kilimanjaro: Marangu Route Trek — 8 Days

Africa's highest peak via the oldest, most direct route: 5,895 meters from montane forest to crater rim

Mount Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 meters from the Tanzanian plains as the world's tallest free-standing mountain. The Marangu Route, the original climbing path established over a century ago, ascends the peak in eight days by way of hut-based accommodation—a structure that distinguishes it from other routes and allows trekkers to travel with minimal equipment. The trek traverses five distinct ecological zones: lush montane forest in the lower reaches, moorland studded with giant heather and lobelias, alpine desert above 4,000 meters, and finally the ice-capped summit. Most climbers reach either Gillman's Point on the crater rim or Uhuru Peak, the actual summit, without mountaineering experience or technical climbing skills. The route follows established trails with water points marked at key intervals and huts providing communal bunk accommodations at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo. An acclimatization day at Horombo Hut on Day 4 is standard to reduce the risk of altitude sickness during the final push. The summit push occurs at night, departing Kibo Hut before midnight to reach the rim by first light, then descending the same day to Horombo for overnight rest before the final descent to the gate.

Best time to go: January to March & June to October.

Day by day

1Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to ArushaKilimanjaro International Airport · Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, guests are collected by a transfer driver and driven to a pre-booked hotel in Arusha. After settling in and resting, an orientation meeting is held with the trek leader, guides, porters, and cooks. The session covers route conditions, acclimatization protocols, and practical guidelines for the days ahead.
2Marangu Gate to Mandara HutMarangu Gate · Mandara Hut · Arusha hotel · montane rainforest · montane rainforest to Mandara Hut
A three-hour transfer from your Arusha hotel brings you to Marangu Gate, the entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing registration formalities and meeting your guide and porters, you'll distribute gear and prepare for the trek ahead. The trail climbs steadily through montane rainforest, following a well-formed path that winds uphill through lush vegetation. Despite the continuous elevation gain—from 1,860 meters to 2,700 meters—the dense greenery makes the ascent feel less taxing than it is. The forest floor is perpetually damp; rain gear proves essential. Along the way, you'll cross small streams and encounter picturesque waterfalls marking the trek's midpoint. After approximately five hours and 8.1 kilometers, the forest canopy opens. Vegetation transitions from dense rainforest to alpine heath and moorland, signaling your approach to Mandara Hut. Watch for blue monkeys in the trees, and if fortunate, black and white colobus monkeys moving through the canopy. Upon arrival, a meal awaits. Afterward, you can rest in your hut or venture out to visit the surrounding landscape as your body acclimates to the altitude. The shift in environment here marks your first real transition on the mountain.
3Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut across the moorland zoneMandara Hut to Horombo Hut · Horombo Hut · the trail
The trail from Mandara first passes through a section of forest before opening into extensive moorland dominated by giant heather, with scattered giant senecios and lobelias visible across the landscape. On clear days, both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks are visible from the trail. The 11.6-kilometer hike to Horombo Hut covers approximately six hours, ascending from 2,700 to 3,700 meters. Horombo Hut sits in a scenic location with Mawenzi in the background and accommodates 120 climbers. A midday meal and evening dinner are provided, with time to rest or walk around the camp.
4Acclimatization day: Horombo Hut to Zebra Rocks and returnHorombo Hut to Zebra Rocks · Horombo Hut · alpine desert terrain
An extra night at Horombo allows the body to adjust to the thinner air at 3,700 meters before higher ascents. Trekkers make a day hike to Zebra Rocks—a round trip covering approximately 4.5 hours of actual hiking. The trail climbs through alpine desert terrain dominated by mosses and lichen, with open vistas of the moorland below. Proper nutrition during this acclimatization day is emphasized. Trekkers may rest in the hut, read, or spend time at the camp between meals.
5Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut across the alpine saddleHorombo Hut to Kibo Hut across the alpine saddle · Kibo Hut · Last Water Point
Early departure begins the 1,000-meter ascent to Kibo Hut at 4,700 meters, leaving behind the moorland beauty for alpine desert terrain. As the trail climbs steadily over 9.6 kilometers—a walk of approximately six hours—vegetation thins progressively until nearly disappearing entirely. The path passes the Last Water Point, marked by a signpost, where trekkers and cooks fill all bottles for drinking and food preparation; no running water is available again until the descent to Horombo the following day. Beyond this critical point, the landscape transitions to a barren saddle dotted with small patches of alpine vegetation and wildflowers growing improbably among rocks. After lunch, the steep ascent toward Kibo Hut continues through dramatic, open terrain with hovering clouds overhead—the landscape's scale and geometry make the difficult climbing feel manageable. On reaching the campsite, the immediate task is rest. An early dinner is served, with overnight sleep beginning by 7 p.m. in preparation for the midnight summit push. Acclimatize and conserve energy; the night ahead demands it.
6Summit push: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and descent to Horombo HutKibo Hut · Uhuru Peak · Horombo Hut · Hans Meyer Cave · Gillman's Point
The group wakes before midnight and is served tea and biscuits before beginning the summit push. The rocky path ascends to Hans Meyer Cave, then continues via a zigzag route for two to three hours to Gillman's Point on the crater rim. From Gillman's Point, a steep 200-meter stretch leads to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters—the highest point on the African continent. The mental demands of the final push often exceed physical exertion, though steady small steps prove sufficient. The total time from Kibo Hut to summit is typically seven to eight hours. The sunrise viewed from the summit is followed by a brief rest at Uhuru Peak before the descent begins. The group descends to Kibo Hut for refreshments, then continues down to Horombo Hut for overnight rest, a total descent time of six to eight hours.
7Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and return to ArushaMarangu Gate · Horombo Hut to Mandara Hut · Meru View Lodge
The descent continues from Horombo Hut to Mandara Hut (9.6 kilometers, approximately six hours), retracing the montane forest terrain. The path then follows the initial climbing route back down to Marangu Gate at 1,860 meters. Upon arrival at the gate, trekkers receive their summit certificates commemorating a successful climb. A transfer vehicle returns the group to Arusha for dinner and overnight accommodation at Meru View Lodge.
