Nasu & Shirakawa: Cycling Through Haiku Country — 5 Days

E-bike tour through rural Nasu and Shirakawa, following Matsuo Basho's literary landscape and Japan's oldest public park

This five-day cycle tour moves through the agricultural highlands and river villages of Nasu and Shirakawa prefectures, two regions defined by their connection to Japanese literary tradition and early modern history. The route begins in Nasu, a former imperial resort now known for small-scale food producers and dairy farms, and proceeds south through rice paddies and quiet countryside to Ashino and Shirakawa. The tour follows the landscape that inspired Matsuo Basho's haiku poetry, visits Nanko Park (established 1801, Japan's oldest public park), and passes through Shirakawa-no-Seki, an ancient border checkpoint between northern tribal territories and the Imperial Court during the Nara and Heian periods. E-hybrid bikes handle the rolling terrain and longer daily distances, allowing riders of beginner experience to cover 36 to 44 kilometers per day with support vehicle, luggage transfer, and a guide familiar with local history, food networks, and cultural sites. Accommodation alternates between traditional onsen ryokan (Japanese inns with natural hot springs) and a modern hotel with onsen facilities. All meals source local ingredients, including one full-course lunch prepared at a working farmer's house.
