Nasu Volcano & Highland — Cycling and Hiking — 2 Days

20–30 km cycle through Nasu Highlands with gourmet stops, followed by hiking around the active volcano Mt. Chausu

This two-day tour combines cycling and hiking in the Nasu mountain range, a volcanic complex in northeastern Nikko National Park. The route follows quiet countryside roads through the Nasu Highlands, a region that developed as a royal resort when the Emperor built a summer residence here around a century ago. This heritage has established the area as a center for regional food production—Wagyu beef, soba, freshwater fish, craft beer, and local cheeses mark the cycling stages. The hiking portion visits Mt. Chausu, the range's active main peak, where daily volcanic emissions create a landscape distinct from the surrounding forests. Autumn color peaks in October. Accommodation includes an onsen ryokan (hot-spring inn), and a guide cyclist and support van accompany the group throughout.

Highlights

  • Cycling route through Nasu Highlands with stops at local food producers (soba, cheesecake, craft beer brewery)
  • Mt. Chausu summit hike with active volcanic landscape and views across the volcanic complex
  • Sessho-seki (Killing Stone) and historic onsen shrine visit during the hiking section
  • Overnight stay at onsen ryokan with access to natural hot springs
  • High-quality road bike or e-hybrid bike rental included; e-bikes reduce elevation and distance
  • Support van and trained cycling guide throughout both days
