Nepal: Dolpo Wilderness Trek — 15 Days
Bon-po heartland, Numa La and Baga La passes, and Phoksundo Lake — a full-circuit traverse of Nepal's most remote district
Dolpo occupies Nepal's largest district by area, covering roughly 5.36 percent of the country's total landmass at elevations ranging from 5,003 to 25,016 feet above sea level. Much of it sits within the Shey Phoksundo National Park, and the northern border runs along Tibet — a geographic fact that has shaped everything from trade routes to religious practice. This is one of the highest inhabited regions on earth, and one of the last places where Bon, the shamanistic tradition that predates Tibetan Buddhism, remains a living faith rather than a historical footnote. The district was closed to foreign visitors until 1989, and development arrived late and lightly. The villages that exist here are fortress-like clusters of stone and mud brick, set against bare mountain faces and connected by trails that cross passes above 5,000 meters. Writers Peter Matthiessen and David Snellgrove both passed through, drawn to the Shey Gompa north of Phoksundo Lake — a destination that anchors most Dolpo itineraries. This 15-day trek goes further, crossing both the Numa La Pass at 5,180 meters and the Baga La Pass at 5,070 meters before descending to Phoksundo Lake, Nepal's deepest, at 3,730 meters. The route begins with two flights — Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then a 35-minute mountain flight into Juphal — and proceeds on foot through ascending terrain to an acclimatization stop at Dho Tarap (4,050 meters), an ancient trade hub at the historical junction between Tibet and the Mustang Kingdom. Accommodation throughout the trek is in tented camps. The Shey Phoksundo National Park protects snow leopard, musk deer, and Tibetan wolf in the surrounding terrain.
Highlights
- Two domestic flights link Kathmandu to the trailhead: Kathmandu–Nepalgunj followed by a 35-minute mountain flight into Juphal's high-altitude STOL airstrip
- Full traverse of active Bon-po territory, where Bon — the shamanistic tradition predating Tibetan Buddhism — remains a practiced faith in settlements such as Ringmo
- Crossing the Numa La Pass at 5,180 meters, with views toward Mt. Dhaulagiri and the Churen Himal ranges
- Crossing the Baga La Pass at 5,070 meters on the descent toward Phoksundo Lake
- Arrival at Phoksundo Lake (3,730 meters) — Nepal's deepest lake, set beneath cliffs and known for its deep turquoise color
- Acclimatization day at Dho Tarap (4,050 meters), historically a trade junction between Tibet and the Mustang Kingdom
- Passage through Tarakot, a fortified hilltop settlement with documented historical significance as a strategic stronghold
- Trek through wild rose and juniper forest on the approach to Dho Tarap
- Shey Phoksundo National Park habitat for snow leopard, musk deer, and Tibetan wolf
- Ringmo village, one of the last inhabited communities centered on Bon religious practice
- The entire itinerary operates as a tented camp expedition — no lodge infrastructure on the main trekking days
- Route traverses one of the world's highest permanently inhabited regions, between 5,003 and 25,016 feet above sea level
- Literary precedent: the Shey Gompa and Phoksundo landscape documented in Peter Matthiessen's 'The Snow Leopard' and David Snellgrove's 'Himalayan Pilgrimage'
