Nepal to Tibet Overland: Kathmandu to Lhasa via the Friendship Highway — 8 Days

Group land crossing from Kathmandu to Lhasa across five Tibetan cities, with two full days of Lhasa sightseeing

This eight-day overland route connects Kathmandu to Lhasa by road, crossing the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung and following the Friendship Highway through some of Tibet's most historically significant stops. The itinerary is structured as a group tour, keeping costs low through shared accommodation and collective permitting, while maintaining a professional English-speaking Tibetan guide throughout. The route is deliberately staged for altitude acclimatization. After crossing into Tibet, the group spends the first nights at Kerung (3,750 m) and Xegar (4,050 m) before descending slightly to Shigatse (3,900 m) and Gyantse (3,950 m) — two cities that hold a significant share of Tibet's monastic and fortress heritage. By the time the group reaches Lhasa at 3,650 m, the body has had nearly a week to adjust across progressively elevated terrain. Driving days average five to seven hours, with stops at notable landmarks along each segment. Tashilunpo Monastery in Shigatse, built in 1447 and historically home to more than 3,000 monks, and the fortress complex of Gyantse Dzong mark the midpoint of the journey. The road from Shigatse to Lhasa crosses two high passes — Karo La at 5,045 m and Kamba La at 4,794 m — with Yamdrok Lake visible from the descent. Two full days in Lhasa cover the Potala Palace, Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery, Jokhang Temple, Norbulingka Palace, and Barkhor Square. Entrance fees to all principal monuments are included. On day eight, the tour concludes in Lhasa, with onward options by air to Kathmandu or mainland China, by road back to Nepal, or by train.

Best time to go: April to October
