Northern Laos by Bike and Boat: 10 Days Luang Prabang to Mekong

290–350 km of cycling through ethnic villages, Pak Ou Caves, and the 100 Waterfalls trek, with elephant encounter and homestay in coffee-growing highlands

This 10-day loop traces the northern Mekong and Nam Ou rivers by bicycle and boat, moving between Luang Prabang, limestone-flanked valleys, and the remote uplands of Oudomxay Province. The route covers 290–350 km on tarmac, depending on routing choices and pace. You'll cycle past Hmong and Khamu villages, swim in the turquoise pools at Kuang Si, navigate the 100 Waterfalls on foot across streams and jungle, stay in a coffee-farming homestay, and spend a half-day at Mekong Elephant Park, where rescued elephants bathe with their mahouts in a welfare-first setting. A support vehicle and mechanic accompany the group throughout; e-bike options are available. Meals and lodging are included, with overnight stays split between Luang Prabang, Nong Khiew, Nam Kat Yorla Pa resort, a village homestay, and Pakbeng. The itinerary is built around partnerships with local trainers, cooperatives, and conservation-focused operators.

Day by day

1Arrival in Luang PrabangLuang Prabang · old quarter · local restaurant
Airport transfer to your hotel in Luang Prabang. The town sits on a peninsula formed by the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers, a geography that has anchored it as a regional crossroads for centuries. The evening is unstructured—visit the old quarter on foot or simply rest after travel. Dinner is at a local restaurant that provides vocational training to young people from the surrounding area, connecting your first meal to the community partnerships woven through the itinerary.
2Cycling to Kuang Si Waterfalls via Hmong and Khamu VillagesKuang Si Waterfalls · main road south from Luang Prabang toward Kuang Si · Laos Buffalo Dairy
Your first full day on the bike covers the main road south from Luang Prabang toward Kuang Si, passing through Hmong and Khamu ethnic settlements. The route is tarmac, mostly flat, and offers a steady introduction to the region's rural character. You'll arrive at Kuang Si Waterfalls, where turquoise pools cascade down limestone terraces—a chance to swim and cool off. On the return, you'll call at Laos Buffalo Dairy, a working farm that combines animal welfare education with practical cheese and ice cream production, supporting local village income. Lunch is a picnic served in the farm's pagoda.
3Boat Ride to Pak Ou Caves and Cycle to Nong KhiewPak Ou Caves · countryside toward the Nam Ou dam · Nam Ou River to Nong Khiew
The day opens with a boat ride up the Mekong to Pak Ou Caves, a site of Buddhist and animist spiritual significance for centuries. Two caves—Tam Ting—hold over 4,000 wooden Buddha figures, many finely carved, along with stupas and shrines that testify to the skill of Lao craftsmen across generations. After exploring the caves, you cycle on tarmac through countryside toward the Nam Ou dam, then transfer to a smaller boat for a scenic cruise up the Nam Ou River to Nong Khiew, a modest river town that serves as a base for the next two days.
4The 100 Waterfalls Trek and Nam Ou River100 Waterfalls · Nam Ou · Nong Khiew
A full-day hike in the limestone and jungle terrain around Nong Khiew. The day begins with a peaceful boat ride on the Nam Ou, allowing you to observe village life along the riverbanks before entering the forest. From the river, the trek follows small streams and rice paddies to the base of the 100 Waterfalls—a series of cascades that tumble through dense green jungle. For several hours you move between pools, hearing only water and wildlife, with opportunities to wade and swim. Your guide prepares lunch on-site in local style, cooked amid the vegetation. A trail across the top of the falls offers wide views over the Nam Ou valley before you return to the river for a boat transfer back to Nong Khiew.
5Cycling Over Limestone Ridges to Nam Kat Yorla PaNam Ou valley · Pakmong · Oudomxay · Nam Kat Yorla Pa resort
A 30 km bike ride through the Nam Ou valley, with limestone peaks flanking either side of the road. Tarmac throughout, with moderate elevation gain toward Pakmong, where a viewpoint offers perspective over the route ahead. You then cycle downhill into Oudomxay, a regional trading hub, before a final 15 km leg to Nam Kat Yorla Pa resort, situated in forest on the banks of the Kat River. The landscape shifts from riverine valley to upland forest as you climb.
6Nam Kat Yorla Pa: Trekking and Zipline ActivitiesNam Kat Yorla Pa resort
A full day at the resort to visit activities at your own pace. The standard recommendation is a guided trek to the viewpoint overlooking the Kat River valley and forest, plus the zipline course through the canopy—both activities allow you to see the landscape from different vantage points without the exertion of a full cycling day.
7Cycling Through Plantations to Coffee Village Ban KavangBan Kavang · Oudomxay · teak and banana plantations
Transfer to Oudomxay in the morning, then begin a 50 km bike ride through teak and banana plantations toward the small village of Ban Kavang, situated in the uplands. The landscape transitions from river valleys to agricultural land and forest. After lunch in the village, you'll learn about Arabica coffee production and the UpLao program, which trains farmers in sustainable agricultural techniques—soil improvement, crop rotation, and alternatives to slash-and-burn farming. This evening, you stay in a homestay with a local family, gaining an authentic perspective on rural Laotian life and livelihood.
8Cycling Plantations to Pakbeng on the MekongPakbeng · Ban Kavang
Departing Ban Kavang, you cycle through banana and teak plantations toward Pakbeng, a riverside town on the Mekong. The afternoon is free to rest at your hotel, watch the sunset over the river, and observe elephants and their mahouts bathing in the water—a daily ritual at this bend of the Mekong.
9Half-Day at Mekong Elephant ParkMekong Elephant Park
Mekong Elephant Park operates on animal-first welfare principles aligned with current global guidelines for elephant care. The half-day itinerary begins with a presentation on the complex history of elephants in Laos, followed by walking alongside the elephants in a natural setting and watching them bathe with their mahouts in the river. The park is designed to observe natural behavior in natural environments and does not involve riding. This approach to encounter differs markedly from tourism operations elsewhere in the region.
10Slow Boat Down the Mekong to Luang PrabangLuang Prabang · the slow boat · the mighty Mekong · remote villages on the banks of the river
Sit back and relax as the slow boat chugs down the mighty Mekong, stopping to ferry goods and passengers to remote villages on the banks of the river, and enjoy a Lao picnic lunch on board. A Lao-style picnic lunch is served on board. The boat arrives in Luang Prabang around 5 pm, allowing time to visit the Hmong night market before your final night in town.
