Northern Laos: Hill-Tribe Villages, Nam Ha Forest & Nam Ou River — 10 Days

Trek the Nam Ha National Protected Area and travel by longtail boat down the Nam Ou River through remote villages and limestone terrain, ending in Luang Prabang.

This 10-day route moves through rural northern Laos from the Thai border to the former royal capital, combining three distinct phases: initial hill-tribe village walks around Luang Namtha and the Nam Ha Protected Area; a three-day forest trek through mixed terrain; and a downriver journey by traditional longtail boat through a landscape of limestone cliffs and river villages accessible primarily by water. The itinerary passes through settlements of Lanten, Akha, Hmong, Khmu, and Lao Lum communities, with stops at local markets, a waterfall system, and Ban Nayang's cotton-weaving households. Accommodation ranges from village homestays during trekking phases to guesthouses and hotels in town bases. The pace allows time in each location without rushed transitions; guides are English-speaking and can adjust trek routes based on group fitness and conditions. The route concludes in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
