Northern Thailand Hilltribes Trek — 5 Days

Trek from Chiang Mai through Lahu and Karen villages to Ban Jabo, staying overnight in hilltribe communities and exploring Tham Lod Cave by bamboo raft.

This five-day trek moves inland from Chiang Mai into the mountains of northern Thailand, where Lahu and Karen communities maintain distinct languages, clothing, and daily practices. You walk through bamboo and teak forests, rice paddies, and ridge lines, stopping to learn about medicinal plants and seasonal forest resources alongside your local guides. The route includes two overnight stays in hilltribe villages—first in a Lahu settlement, then in the Karen village of Ban Muang Pam—where you participate in cooking, weaving, and traditional crafts. A bamboo raft passage through Tham Lod Cave, a 1,666-meter subterranean system with multiple chambers, forms the route's centerpiece. You end in Ban Jabo, a Black Lahu village, before returning to Chiang Mai on day five.

Your guides point out medicinal plants and edible species as you go, establishing the pattern of learning the forest's resources by sight rather than lecture. Lunch arrives en route. The afternoon carries you across rice fields and river valleys toward Ban Pha Mon, a Lahu settlement in the hills. On arrival, you help with food preparation or accept a traditional Lahu massage. Overnight in a basic hilltribe hut.
