Northern Thailand: Hmong Hilltribe & Soft Adventure — 3 Days

Mountain biking, river rafting, and village stays in Chiang Mai Province at 850+ metres elevation

This three-day circuit moves through the upland regions north of Chiang Mai, combining low-intensity outdoor activity—mountain biking on dirt roads, rafting on class II river sections, and forest trekking—with stays in Hmong villages and exposure to agricultural and cultural practices in the high country. The itinerary balances physical engagement with observational visits to communities and projects reshaping land use in these areas, without requiring previous climbing or technical skill. Accommodation is at a basic lodge; meals are prepared locally.

Highlights

  • Hilltribe Museum: documented history and material culture of seven ethnic groups in Northern Thailand
  • 45-minute elephant trek through rainforest at Ban Mae Taman, or alternatively 14-kilometre cave system inside Doi Chiang Dao (2,175 metres, Thailand's third highest peak)
  • Class II whitewater rafting on inflatable rafts through river gorges, duration varies by season
  • Mountain bike ride on dirt roads: Ban Teen Doi to Ban Mae Pa to Ban Palan, with visits to village reservoir and Ban Pong Kwaw temple (centuries-old wall paintings)
  • Overnight stays at Hmong Hilltribe Lodge (850 metres) and guided visits to Ban Mae Khi village and surrounding vegetable farms
  • Afternoon tea with a village shaman and conversation about local forest and mountain beliefs
  • Royal Project at Ban Nong Hoi Kao: observation of vegetable and flower cultivation on former opium-growing land
  • Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden and orchid farm, snake farm, and Elephant Poopoopaper Park (paper production from elephant fibre)

Day by day

1Chiang Mai to Ban Mae Taman: Hilltribe Museum, Elephant Trek & RaftingBan Mae Taman · Hilltribe Museum · Doi Chiang Dao Cave · river gorges · Hmong Hilltribe Lodge
Departure from Chiang Mai—airport, railway station, bus terminal, or hotel—in an off-road vehicle. First stop is the Hilltribe Museum (note: closed Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays), which holds documents and artefacts tracing the origins and material practices of seven ethnic groups in the region. From there, continue approximately 70 kilometres north toward Ban Mae Taman for a 45-minute trek through rainforest on elephant back, followed by a 15–20 minute ox-cart ride. (Alternative route: instead of the elephant and ox-cart activities, proceed from Mae Malai market to Doi Chiang Dao Cave, 70 kilometres north of the city en route to Fang. This limestone mountain rises to 2,175 metres and contains a 14-kilometre network of caverns and underground passages.) Midday meal at a local restaurant precedes boarding inflatable rubber rafts for whitewater rafting through river gorges; the journey typically lasts about one hour, depending on seasonal water levels and flow rates. Continue by four-wheel drive to Ban Pang Hai, a village settlement at 850 metres elevation. Check in at Hmong Hilltribe Lodge for the night. Dinner includes barbecued meats, Thai dishes, salad, pasta, fruit, and dessert, followed by Hmong cultural presentations.
2Mountain Biking & Village Walking: Ban Teen Doi to Ban Mae KhiBan Mae Khi · Ban Teen Doi village · Ban Palan · Ban Pong Kwaw · Baan Nong Hoi Mai village · Hmong Hilltribe Lodge · Ban Teen Doi to Ban Mae Pa to Ban Palan
After breakfast, drive to Ban Teen Doi village and walk to Ban Mae Pa, then proceed on mountain bikes over dirt roads to Ban Palan, stopping at a small village reservoir. Continue to Ban Pong Kwaw to visit an ancient temple featuring wall paintings. Picnic lunch follows. The route then heads to Baan Nong Hoi Mai village before a leisurely trek through rainforest and vegetable farms to Ban Mae Khi. The walk takes in both daytime settlement views and the return of workers from surrounding fields as afternoon progresses into dusk. Tea is taken with a village shaman, an opportunity to learn about local beliefs regarding spirits in the forest and mountains. Return to Hmong Hilltribe Lodge for dinner and overnight accommodation.
3Royal Project, Botanical Garden & Return to Chiang MaiChiang Mai · Royal Project at Ban Nong Hoi Kao · Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden and orchid farm · a local restaurant · snake farm · Elephant Poopoopaper Park
After breakfast, check out from the lodge and drive to the Royal Project at Ban Nong Hoi Kao, where vegetable and flower cultivation has replaced opium-poppy farming. The project also purchases produce from hilltribe farmers for retail sale. Continue to Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden and orchid farm. Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon visits include the snake farm and Elephant Poopoopaper Park, where paper is produced from processed elephant fibre. Return to Chiang Mai in the late afternoon.
