Northern Thailand & Laos by Mountain Bike — 10 Days

545 kilometers of cycling from Chiang Mai through teak forests and ethnic villages to Luang Prabang, crossing the Mekong by slow boat

This 10-day cycle route links northern Thailand and Laos along a path that moves deliberately through working landscapes—teak forests, rice paddies, tobacco fields, and river valleys—rather than toward summits or selected sightseeing. The ride covers 545 kilometers across terrain that shifts from singletrack to dirt road to riverbank pavement, punctuated by village encounters, a two-day boat journey down the Mekong, and a forest trek to a series of limestone waterfalls. The route passes through territories of Akha, Lisu, Lau, Palaung, Phu Tai, Tai Lu, Hmong, Tai Dam, and Khamu communities, though the focus remains on riding and on what unfolds from the bicycle seat rather than on cultural performance. Accommodation is modest throughout—guesthouses and small resorts rather than luxury properties—and the itinerary assumes competent intermediate-level riders comfortable with extended climbing and variable road surfaces.
